Coyotes

TORONTO-- Peter Holland scored the shootout winner against his former team, giving the Arizona Coyotes a 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre on Thursday.
Holland was traded to the Coyotes last Friday for a pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. He played eight games for Toronto this season, and 174 over four seasons.
"It's a good feeling. It obviously feels good to just help the team win," Holland said. "That's the biggest thing, is that I'm an Arizona Coyote now and we got two points tonight."

Mike Smith made 44 saves and stopped three shootout attempts for Arizona (11-11-7), which has won two consecutive games and is 3-1-1 in its past five games.
Toronto (11-14-5) has lost its past four home games.
Smith made 20 saves in the first period. With eight seconds remaining, Auston Matthews scored on a power play with a wrist shot from the top of the right-wing circle to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. The goal was Matthews' 14th of the season and eighth in his past 10 games.
"It great," said Matthews, who grew up in Arizona. "It's always fun to score goals, it's what I like to do, and going into this game I just looked at it as another game. Obviously, you're playing your hometown team, so that's kind of special, but I tried to not let that get too heavy on myself. Just go out there and play."
Jordan Martinook scored at 1:10 of the second period to tie the game 1-1.
"We came in here and we weren't real thrilled with that first period and we wanted to throw that out and start fresh from the second period," Smith said. "I thought we did that in the first 10 minutes, we started to take over a little bit and got some chances and obviously some goals. Kind of a seesaw after that, but I thought we did a good job to get rid of that first period and come back in the second and get going a little bit."
Toronto forward Ben Smith took a hooking penalty at 2:09 and forward Zach Hyman was assessed a cross-checking penalty at 2:42, giving Arizona a 5-on-3 power play for 1:27 and depriving the Maple Leafs two of their most reliable penalty-killers. Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead on a shot to Frederik Andersen's glove side at 3:24.
Mitch Marner skated in on a breakaway from the blue line and scored his eighth goal of the season to tie the game 2-2 at 13:56 of the second.

Goal of the game

Marner took a bank-pass from defenseman Roman Polak and scored with a wrist shot to end an 11-game streak without a goal (Nov. 17).

They said it

"He's a heck of a player, he's all over the puck, he's all around the net, and he's going to be good for a long time. Unfortunately we didn't get him, but he's a talented kid, that's for sure." -- Coyotes goalie Mike Smith on Auston Matthews
"I was pretty nervous leading up to the game; I didn't really get a good afternoon nap today but I was happy that Coach Tippett started my line and we got into it right away and I was just happy to get that first shift over and then I felt like I was into it, so I'm happy the way it turned out for us." -- Coyotes forward Peter Holland
"We hit a bar and two posts [in the shootout]. In saying that, let's be honest, we did tons of good things. It says on this sheet that we directed 85 shots on net that way. It was a pretty good night. I thought we made some big mistakes: They got a breakaway on the power play, they got a breakaway with four minutes left. In saying that, we had the puck a ton, to say the least, and multiple, multiple chances. We're real snakebitten around the net right now. Just keep grinding and it'll go your way. Just keep doing good things." -- Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock
