The Sixteen: Golden Knights Defeat Oilers in Game 5; Take 3-2 Series Lead

After a Game 4 loss on the road in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Vegas Golden Knights returned to home ice to try to regain the series lead against the Edmonton Oilers.

"We didn't start the game the way we needed to to beat a good hockey club," Bruce Cassidy said regarding the loss. "We just didn't finish, and we needed to tonight."

As the puck dropped in Game 5, for the fifth game in a row, the Oilers got on the board first thanks to a power-play goal by Connor McDavid. And just like before, Vegas quickly struck back 50 seconds later as Jack Eichel found the back of the net. Zach Hyman gave Edmonton the lead again with a goal halfway through the first period, making it 2-1.

In the second, Vegas potted three straight goals from Mark Stone and Reilly Smith on the power play followed by an even strength goal from Nicolas Hague. The Golden Knights entered the third period up 4-2.

In the third, the lone Oilers' goal came from McDavid on the power play once again, but it wasn't enough as time wound down for a 4-3 Golden Knights final.

Even after giving up three power-play goals, the Golden Knights still came out on top with Eichel having a three-point night (1G, 2A).

The Golden Knights were now just one win away from advancing to the Western Conference Final. The win was most special for William Karlsson, whose son, Beckham Karlsson, had just been born earlier that morning.

"I didn't sleep too much last night," Karlsson said. "[This win] is a cherry on top. That's a good way to describe it."
