WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils continue their five-game road trip in Arizona Tuesday night. The game can be seen on MSG+ and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 10:08 p.m. ET.
Here are some observations from the game...
- Ty Smith had one of his better games of the season. He scored in the third period after receiving a drop pass and coasting into the high circles to whip a wrister into the net. He also intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and countered with a semi-breakaway that drew a penalty. In fact, Smith drew two penalties in the contest and was solid in his own end.
- Devil captain Nico Hischier picked up an assist on Smith's goal to give him a new career-high 54 points in a season (20G-34A) and his 200th career point. Rookie Fabian Zetterlund also picked up an assist, his first-career NHL point. A couple milestones on one goal.
- The Devils on a whole did a really good job inside the D zone of taking away passing lanes and setting up in the house, slot and above the circles. They forced the Stars to play mostly along the perimeter and settling for long-range shots and low-grade scoring chances. While the Stars were able to get the occasional puck through a lane, it was more a rarity in the contest.
- Since Dallas wasn't able to get a lot of lateral puck movement in the Devils zone, goaltender Nico Daws didn't have to move side-to-side much. It allowed him to stay square on pucks and easily set in the proper position. From there, he easily handled most of what was thrown at him, coming up with saves on 27 of 28 shots. It was a solid effort in goal, something that's been lacking of late for New Jersey.
- Daws did have to move laterally to make a couple big saves. The first was on Joe Pavelski. Daws slid from his right to his left, split his pad and stacking his glove on top to catch Pavelski's shot. The second came on a power play. Again, Daws went right to left and squared against the post to deny Jason Robertson.
- It was an uncommonly undisciplined game for the Devils. They took six penalties in the contest, the most since they also had six infractions Nov. 5, 2021, at Los Angeles. That was the ninth game of the season, or 63 games ago. Since then, there was only one game where they had five.
