GAME STORY: Islanders 3, Devils 2 (SO)

NEWARK, NJ - The Devils put up a valiant effort, tying the game in the third period and appearing to win in OT before it was called back due to offsides. Ultimately, the New York Islanders pulled it out in a four-round shootout with Oliver Wahlstrom scoring the deciding marker.

P.K. Subban ripped a blast from the left circle past Sorokin which appeared to win it for the Devils. But after a lengthy review, it was determined that Jesper Bratt was offside when Pavel Zacha carried the puck into the zone.
"I've seen it. I've looked at it. I really can't be conclusive whether (Bratt) is over or not over. It's a really tight call," said Devils head coach Lindy Ruff, adding that there was a lot of hurdles for the Devils tonight.
"We almost had everything thrown at us. We had a goal scored against us with one second left but bounced back. We took (the shootout) down to the third shooter. We get a save there or we score with our previous shooter we've got the game.
"It's heartbreaking. A lot of crazy stuff happened."
With 2:24 to go in overtime, Nelson was called for hooking, giving the Devils another chance to win the game, this time on a four-on-three power play.
Shots in overtime were 3-0 Devils but nothing was solved.
"It's not great. When you lose a game like that. We had some good looks, a four-on-three in overtime and that offside call in overtime. You want to win games like that," said Pavel Zacha after the game.
"It's not easy but I think we came out, we created on the power play. We had some good looks but we just couldn't score."
Zacha echoed Ruff's thoughts on such a thin margin, that being one extra shootout goal.
"(Gusev) scored in the shootout, too, but we need to score more."
Scott Wedgewood turned aside 32 of 34 shots in a strong performance for the Devils.
"I'm confident. I'm trusting what I've been doing. I'm trusting the process and the guys around me," Wedgewood said. "The biggest thing is trusting my feet movement. I used to slide a lot more than I do now. Taking advantage of that got me across the net to make a few saves that in past years I might not have been able to do."
There was a slight delay at the beginning of the game as there was an issue with the Islanders lineup. Noah Dobson was added to the COVID-19 Protocol List moments before the start of the game, resulting in Sebastian Aho dressing in his place. J-G Pageau was also placed on the list earlier today.
Scrambling to take the ice after being a surprise roster addition, Aho swatted at a rolling puck from the side boards that was tipped on its way to the net by Kieffer Bellows in front. Bellows, who scored his first two goals of the season last night, scored again here to put the Islanders on the board early.

Less than a minute after the Bellows goal, Andy Greene took a penalty for delay of game, puck over glass. Shots on goal five minutes into the game were 7-1 for the Islanders.
Janne Kuokkanen picked up a rebound in front of the net and backhanded it past a screened Ilya Sorokin to tie the game at 1-1 only seconds into the power play. The goal was Kuokkanen's fourth in as many games and snapped the Devils goalless drought with the man advantage.
Kuokkanen was called for tripping to give the Islanders their first power play of the game four minutes later but Devils were able to kill it off. Shots on goal were 9-4 for the Islanders past the opening period's midway point.
Nick Leddy was called for slashing to send the Devils on their second power play of the game. That man advantage was negated by a Miles Wood penalty with 22 seconds left. Neither team converted on their power play chance.
With just over a second left to play in the first, Brock Nelson spun and ripped a shot from the right circle that beat Scott Wedgewood, making it a 2-1 game for the Islanders.
Shots on goal in the first were 15-6 for New York.
Matt Martin drove to the net and was chopped down by a diving Dmitry Kulikov. The result was two minutes for Kulikov and another opportunity for the Islanders power play four minutes into the middle frame. Devils PK came up big again.
Yegor Sharangovich wristed a shot from the high slot past Sorokin to knot the game up at 2-2 with 3:56 to go in the second.
Jack Hughes blasted a shot on the rush and Sorokin got just enough of it to keep it out before the rebound was cleared out of harm's way.
After two, shots on goal were 25-18 for the Islanders.
Wedgewood came up with a great pad save on Josh Bailey and the rebound on Brock Nelson to keep the game tied five minutes into the third.
Devils also killed off a penalty to Nate Bastian, making it four kills on the day.
Shots on goal at the end of regulation were 34-28 for the Isles.
