PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. -
With an afternoon game, Lindy Ruff addressed the media this morning at 11 a.m. and while he wouldn't divulge his lineup, he spoke about maintaining the energy that he saw from his team in the game against the Islanders. Some of those lineup questions revolved around whether Alexander Holtz will return to the lineup of if the team will continue playing 11 forwards and seven defensemen against the Sharks.
One of the players who entered the lineup for the first time in the last game was Kevin Bahl, he played as the seventh defenseman and Ruff spoke today about how well Bahl played in that game, in whatever role they asked him to play. He uses his long reach, his big body and has been sound defensively. That could suggest they do not want to remove him from the lineup just yet.
As for Nathan Bastian, he missed practice on Friday (lower-body) but arrived at the arena earlier than usual to skate, test out how he is feeling and will also take warmups with the club.
"Hopefully he will be able to play," Ruff said this morning.
On the Sharks side, Kaapo Kahkonen will start in net. He has played two games this season, both losses and the last time he played was on Oct. 15, against Chicago where he gave up five goals on 25 shots against.

PREVIEW

DEVILS (2-2-0) vs SHARKS (1-5-0)
TV:1 p.m. ET on MSG
RADIO:1 p.m. ET on Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
The Devils and Sharks played twice last season, both games in Nov. 2021. In the first game on Nov. 6 New Jersey edged San Jose, 3-2, in a shootout. On Nov. 30, the Sharks beat the Devils 5-2.
The second game between these teams this season will be on Jan. 16, 2023 in San Jose.
Devils Team Scope:
After dropping the first two games of the season, New Jersey has put together two straight wins, most recently a 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders. Between using their speed, registering over 30 shots on goal a night, and great performances by goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, the Devils are playing a complete game.
Forward Ondrej Palat leads the Devils in goals with 3, while winger Jesper Bratt has seven assists which puts him first for assists and points. Despite missing the season opener, Captain Nico Hischier has five points (2G, 3A) which is second to Palat in goals and Bratt with assists and points. Center Erik Haula currently leads the NHL in faceoff wins, with a success rate of 69.7%. The Devils are third in the league for faceoff wins (57.6%).
Mackenzie Blackwood has started three of the Devils four games and currently has a 2-1-0 record. The goaltender's save percentage is .885 and he is averaging 2.37 goals against a night.
The Devils penalty kill has only let in one goal this season and has a 92.3% kill rate, which is seventh-best in the league. Although New Jersey only has one power play goal, the team has looked strong through its man advantage opportunities, generating plenty of shots while dominating possession time on Thursday.
Sharks Team Scope:
The Sharks lost their first five games of the season before edging the New York Rangers in overtime on Thursday. The 3-2 victory at Madison Square Garden was the second stop on a four-game East Coast swing for the California team. San Jose is struggling to score as the team is averaging under two goals a game, while it's opponents tend to score over three a contest. However, the Sharks' penalty kill is lethal and has been perfect through six games.
Erik Karlsson leads the Sharks with five points, and is tied for first with goals (2), and assists (3). Logan Couture, Evgeny Svechnikov, and Nico Sturm also have two goals while Mario Ferraro has three assists. James Reimer has played four of San Jose's six games, and the goaltender is averaging 2.78 goals against a game and has a .918 save percentage.
