Johnny Hockey
Devils defenseman John Marino will get a look on the power play for the Devils. He's been a solid camp addition since being acquired in the summer from Pittsburgh, and has made a smooth transition to the Devils organization.
"It's been great," he said. "Learning the new environment, the new guys on the team. They've been great here. They made it pretty easy on me."

Mercy Kill
The Devils are giving Dawson Mercer a look on the PK, something he dabbled with last season. Although Mercer has played primarily on the power play in the NHL, he played a lot of penalty kill with Chicoutimi and Drummondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
"In junior I played all PK, so I've been playing it my whole life. I'm pretty comfortable with it," Mercer said.
It can be difficult for players that are on both special teams units like Nico Hischier or Nathan Bastian, because at practice the PP takes precedent. So, the players will work on power play drills the majority of the time, but be counted on to jump into the PK during a game with little reps. However, the knowledge the power play can transition to PK, according to Mercer.
"It's obviously great being able to play both of them," he said. "You know what you don't like from the power play side, so you know what to do for the PK and strategies you hate when they do it to you. Knowing your system is the big thing, when you know what everyone is doing, your job, your role, I think that makes everything easier when everyone's on the same page."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (3-1-0) at BRUINS (2-1-0)
TV: 7:00 PM ET; Streaming on the Devils App
Head-to-Head
The Devils and Bruins face each other for the first time in the preseason. Both teams will play once again this week but in Boston on Saturday. The last time these opponents faced off in the preseason was during the 2019-20 season and each team picked up a win. The Devils won a 4-3 overtime matchup with the help of Jack Hughes. The forwards scored 41 seconds into the overtime period to win the game in Hughes' preseason debut. The Bruins won 2-0 with Jaroslav Halak stopping all 29 shots he faced.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils have had a strong preseason, winning all but one game so far. New Jersey has picked up wins over the Canadiens, Islanders, and Rangers but dropped its most recent game, 2-1 to the Rangers. Tomas Tatar, Jack Hughes, Dougie Hamilton, and former Bruin, Erik Haula, all have two goals in the preseason.
New Jersey has rotated through the goaltenders they're using to continue to assess the depth they have at the position. Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek have had solid performances, a welcomed relief for a team that struggled with netminder injuries last season.
Captain Nico Hischier is out with a lower body injury as is forward Tyce Thompson. The Devils recently
made some roster cuts
, mainly reassigning players to Utica or their junior teams.
Bruins Team Scope:
The Bruins are a little shorthanded as several key players are out with injuries. Sunday, the team said Taylor Hall is week-to-week with an upper body injury that he sustained in Boston's preseason game on Saturday. Brad Marchand, Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk are also out and will not be available at the start of the season.
Boston has played three preseason games so far, two against the Flyers and one against the Rangers. In the first game against Philadelphia, the Bruins lost 2-1, but rebounded on Saturday with a 4-0 victory. In the lone game against New York, Boston picked up a 3-2 overtime win, last Tuesday.
To finish up the preseason, the Bruins will play three games in six days, including two against the Devils.
