Martin Kaut 2018 NHL Draft pose portrait prospect

Martin Kaut was the 16th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft of the Colorado Avalanche and is attending his first training camp with the club.
A native of Brno, Czech Republic, Kaut had nine goals and seven assists (16 points) in the 38 games with HC Dynamo Pardubice in the top Czech pro league last season. Kaut was ranked as the fourth-best international skater by NHL Central Scouting prior to the draft.
After the main season, Kaut played for his home country at the 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship and recorded two goals and five assists in seven contests.

The right wing recently talked with ColoradoAvalanche.com about his family and summer.
How have you liked Colorado so far?
"It's amazing. I have been to downtown Denver, and it's a really nice city. I have enjoyed every minute of it here so far."
What was your draft day experience like?
"I was really surprised because I had something wrong with my heart and needed surgery a few weeks before the draft. I'm thrilled to be here now."

How old were you when you started playing hockey?
"I was like 3 or 4 years old."
Who got you started playing hockey?
"My dad and my brother."
Who were some of your hockey idols growing up?
"I just grew up watching everyone in the NHL. I didn't really have any favorite players."

What is your favorite activity to do outside of hockey?
"I play tennis with my brother, golf and go fishing with my dad."
If you didn't play hockey what job would you want to have?
"I think I would want to play tennis."
What would you say is the best part about your game?
"I think I am a good two-way forward. I can play the frontline and the backline, so just a typical two-way player."
