Extra Hockey in Edmonton

Nathan MacKinnon scored the game-winning goal after Scott Wedgewood's save in the third round of the shootout to lead the Avalanche past the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 at Rogers Place on Monday. Sam Malinski scored for a Colorado team that went 3/3 in the shootout while Wedgewood stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced. Additionally, Colorado's penalty kill went 3/3 and killed off a five-on-three for 1:24 in the third period.

"[Wedgewood] was good," Avalanche Assistant Coach Dave Hakstol said. "He was rock solid all the way through. I thought he did a real nice job for us. It's a continuation of what he's done for us throughout the season."

With the win, the Avalanche improved to 53-16-11.

"It took us a little while to get going the first few minutes of the hockey game," Hakstol said. "But, I thought after that we played a really sound hockey game. Especially through the majority of the last 50 minutes."

How It Happened

Malinski opened the scoring at 9:05 of the second period with his eighth goal of the season via a left-circle shot set up by Nicolas Roy's feed.
