On Tuesday afternoon and ahead of the first contest of a four-game road trip in California beginning in San Jose, the Colorado Avalanche experienced a 4.4 magnitude earthquake.
The Avalanche were at their hotel staying outside of San Jose and Santa Clara when the earthquake nearly 50 miles away near Hollister and along the Calaveras Fault, which is a major branch of the San Andreas Fault.
The earthquake was quite the experience for the Avalanche as most players were in the midst of their pregame naps when the earthquake hit. For some, it wasn't their first time living through an earthquake, but for most, it was a "rattling" as they experienced the tremor for the first time.
See below for responses from the Avalanche as they recounted what it was like when the earthquake struck.

Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar: I was just trying to doze off for a little bit and I felt it. I wasn't out yet, or it probably would have freaked me out if it had woke me up so I kind of had a good understanding of what was going on as I looked around the room. But it was the first one I've ever been involved in. Some guys were half asleep and were wondering who was rocking their bed. I wasn't as bad.
Bowen Byram: I was sleeping, then I woke up and was just like, 'What's going on?' Then, I fell asleep again back after the earthquake. Then, I thought it was a dream, but then I realized that it was real. I thought it was pretty cool. It was a once in a lifetime experience.
Andrew Cogliano:I was sleeping, that was kind of a standard time for [our pregame naps]. It was pretty cool. I've experienced them before, but nothing like that. That was a big one. I'm pretty sure Mikko slept through it.
J.T. Compher: I was sleeping too, but not as deep [of a sleep] as Mikko.
Jack Johnson:I was in the middle of a pregame nap. It felt like someone was shaking my bed. I woke up, but it wasn't the first time I'd been in one so I knew what was happening.
Ben Meyers: I had just woken up from a nap. The whole room started shaking. I had never felt an earthquake before. It was pretty crazy. I think I realized right away pretty soon into it what was going on. It was still surprising and pretty scary.
Alex Newhook:I was shook up. I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know if we should do something like go to the lobby or something. I was asleep so I woke up in a panic attack. I was out of it and then talked to the boys later about it, it was funny.
Logan O'Connor:I was just watching Netflix and then I saw my whole room frame start shaking out the side. It was definitely a little weird. It took me a second to realize what was going on. It was pretty crazy.
When I was living in Japan when I was younger my parents said we were in an earthquake, but I think that's the only one I remember was the one from the other day.
Mikko Rantanen:I was sleeping. I didn't know it was happening.
Evan Rodrigues: I was sleeping. The bed shook back and forth three or four times, then I heard a little bit of wind outside and went right back to bed. I googled it when I woke up and realized that I slept pretty much through an earthquake and that was my first one, it was pretty cool. I was so tired. I didn't even accept that it had happened and just moved on.
Devon Toews: I was sitting in my bed. [The first thing that went through my mind was] I hope that I survive. It was wild. A few of us started texting, 'What was that? Should we run out of the hotel or stay where we are?' We didn't text any of the trainers or anything, everybody else seemed pretty chill. You look out at the street and people were just walking and going about their day. It was pretty wild though.
I never experienced one [back home in British Columbia], nothing like that. So that was kind of… I wouldn't say fun - I think Bo called it cool and I wouldn't say that either - it was more of just an experience.
