Follow along for updates as Colorado Avalanche skaters Mikko Rantanen (Finland), Denis Malgin (Switzerland) and Brad Hunt (Canada) participate in the 2023 IIHF World Championship for their respective countries. This year's IIHF World Championship will be held on May 12-28 and will be co-hosted by Finland and Latvia.


HUNT AND CANADA CLAIM GOLD

Hunt and Canada completed the tournament with a gold-medal victory as they defeated Germany 5-2 in the final. Hunt totaled 11:21 minutes over 14 shifts and fired two shifts. Hunt wrapped up the tournament with three points on as many assists.


HUNT AND CANADA ADVANCE TO FINALS - MAY 27, 2023

Hunt and Canada have advanced to the finals of the tournament after defeating Latvia 4-2. Hunt logged 12:50 minutes over 19 shifts, took one shot and earned a plus-one rating in the victory. Hunt and Canada will now take on the winner between USA and Germany in the final which will take place on May 28.


MAY 25, 2023

Hunt and Canada eliminated Rantanen and Finland from the tournament with a 4-1 victory. Rantanen recorded an assist on the sole goal for Finland and played 20:44 minutes. Hunt totaled 7:14 minutes and he and Canada will now take on Latvia in the semifinals on May 27.

Malgin and Switzerland also were eliminated from the tournament after dropping a 3-1 result to Germany. Malgin did not play his second-straight game.


QUARTERFINAL MATCHUPS

The Quarterfinals will take place on May 25. Rantanen and Finland will take on Hunt and Canada, while Malgin and Switzerland will face Germany.


MAY 23, 2023

Hunt and Canada secured second place in Group B with a 3-1 victory over Czechia. Hunt tallied an assist on the opening goal of the game that was scored on the power play. Hunt played 10 minutes over 13 shifts.

Rantanen and Finland earned a dominant 7-1 victory over Denmark where Rantanen dished out one assist through 12:47 minutes and 12 shifts. Rantanen also took one penalty and fired off three shots on net.

Malgin and Switzerland suffered their first loss of the tournament by a 4-3 overtime result to Latvia. Malgin did not play.


MAY 22, 2023

Hunt and Canada fell 3-2 in a shootout to Norway. Canada originally fell 2-0 to Norway early in the second period, but managed to strike twice to force overtime and eventually a shootout, but didn't secure the shootout victory. Hunt unleashed two shots on net and skated 14:16 minutes over 18 shifts.


MAY 21, 2023

Malgin and Switzerland maintained their perfect record as they notched their sixth win of the tournament in a 4-2 victory over Czechia. Malgin tallied an assist, took one penalty, fired off three shots, registered a plus-one rating and skated 12:31 minutes over 17 shifts.


MAY 20, 2023

Rantanen and Finland defeated Austria 3-1. Rantanen logged 20:38 minutes over 23 shifts.

Malgin and Switzerland remained undefeated with a 3-2 victory over Hunt and Canada. Hunt registered an assist in the loss for Canada.


MAY 18, 2023

Malgin and Switzerland picked up another win to remain undefeated with a 4-2 victory over Slovakia. Malgin handed out one helper, fired off five shots on net, earned a plus-one rating, and skated 19:59 minutes over 23 shifts.

Rantanen and Finland claimed a 4-1 win over Hungary. Rantanen picked up a point on an assist on the power play, took three shots, was plus-one and logged 12:45 minutes over 12 shifts.


MAY 17, 2023

Rantanen and Finland earned a solid 5-3 win over France. Rantanen handed out two assists, took one penalty, riled off four shots and logged 16:51 minutes over 19 minutes. Finland currently ranks fourth in Group A standings with seven points.

Hunt and Canada picked up a convincing 5-1 win over Kazakhstan where Hunt took two shots and skated 19:28 minutes over 20 shifts. Canada is currently atop Group B's standings with 11 points.

Malgin and Switzerland currently rank second among the Group B standings with nine points.


MAY 16, 2023

Malgin and Switzerland picked up a dominant 5-0 victory over Kazakhstan. Malgin dished out an assist on a power-play goal, totaled 17:37 minutes over 23 shifts and fired off three shots.


MAY 15, 2023

Hunt and Canada picked up another win as they edged Slovakia 2-1 in a shootout victory. Hunt played 19:35 minutes, rifled off two shots and took 25 shifts.

Rantanen and Finland suffered a 2-1 shootout loss to Sweden. Rantanen unleashed two shots, logged 21:35 minutes over 23 shifts.


MAY 14, 2023

Hunt and Team Canada earned their second win of Worlds with a 5-2 result over Slovenia. Hunt took 19 shifts and skated 14:16 minutes.

Malgin and Switzerland shut out Norway 3-0. Malgin logged 16:33 minutes, fired off two shots, took one penalty and totaled 22 shifts.


MAY 13, 2023

Malgin and Team Switzerland got off to a dominant start with a 7-0 result over Slovenia on Saturday. Malgin produced a game-high (tied with one teammate) three-point outing with two goals (both on the power play) and an assist. Malgin totaled 18:08 minutes and took 20 shifts.

Rantanen and Team Finland edged Germany by a 4-3 score to claim the victory. Rantanen picked up his first points of the tournament with two assists. The winger ranked plus-one, logged 17:16 minutes and took 21 shifts.


MAY 12, 2023

Rantanen and Team Finland suffered a 4-1 loss to USA. Rantanen did not produce any points, but totaled 16:17 minutes and took 20 shifts.

Hunt and Team Canada blanked Latvia 6-0. Hunt dished out one assist and skated 14:18 minutes as he took 20 shifts.

MIKKO RANTANEN - TEAM FINLAND

Rantanen has previously played in the Men's World Championships three times (2016, 2017, 2018). Also in 2016, Rantanen captained Team Finland in the 2016 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship to a 4-3 overtime victory over Team Russia.

This year, Rantanen and Finland will participate in Group A with Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Sweden and USA.

DENIS MALGIN - TEAM SWITZERLAND

Malgin is representing Switzerland for the third time at the IIHF World Championship. The 26-year-old forward previously played for Switzerland at the World Championships in 2016-17 and 2021-22.

This year, Malgin and Switzerland will participate in Group B with Canada, Czechia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Norway, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

This marks Hunt's (35) first appearance at the IIHF World Championship with Team Canada.

This year, Hunt and Canada will participate in Group B with Czechia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland.
