red carpet main

LAS VEGAS -- Selecting an outfit for the 2018 NHL Awards presented by Hulu at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was no easy feat for many of the players in attendance on Wednesday. But they had one thing in common; they were showing up and showing out.

Bold colors and head to toe sparkles were in abundance among the nominees, and the effort was definitely there for a lot of players when it came to picking the perfect outfit.
Find out how they got red carpet ready, in their own words.

Sedins Boeser

Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks: "We are very easy. We'll pick a suit and put it on. Nothing to it."
Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks: "My suit guy in Vancouver had a Twitter vote so the fans really chose what I wore today. We picked out a couple patterns and we had this pattern and another pattern. I think a dark gray one and this light blue one. I love it. Blue's my favorite color. I'll be wearing this one a lot."

Ovechkin Backstrom

Nicklas Backstrom, Washington Capitals: "I didn't have too many options, to be honest. It was kind of short notice that we were going to be here. I had it already in my closet. But I like it. It's one of my favorites. You gotta feel good when you're here."
Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals: "It was just simple from Zilli. My wife went to the store and I have a very good relationship with the owner."

Rinne Hellebuyck Subban

Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators: "[Menswear designer] Daphnee Hanrahan from Montreal, she does a great job with my suits. This was an idea, it was just a chance to have some fun with it. It's kind of Las Vegas style. It's a lot of fun. [I wanted] a white dinner jacket and bow tie."
Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets: "I was in contact with King and Bay and I know they have a bunch of flashy suits and they were showing me everything they had, and we were going back and forth. I talked to [girlfriend] Andrea about what we wanted to do and we don't want to blend, so I said I was going to do something flashy. There were some nice blues, some sparkles, some nice suedes but I like the sparkle."
P.K. Subban, Nashville Predators: "This is from the tailor that I always use every year, Sartorialto. [Co-owner] Marc Chevalier always does a really good job of trying to put together something for me that's new, fresh, but still also P.K.-esque and has a little flair to it. I'm very happy with this outfit. [The collar pin chain] it's a little something, something. When everybody thinks they got an edge on me, I gotta take it up a level."

William Karlsson, Vegas Golden Knights:"It's from Gaitano Brand and I had a guy named Tommy, he helped me pick it out and I think this looked pretty cool, a little different, so I said let's go with that. [The jacket lining] is a really cool detail. It was their idea and I went on board with it. I have "Wild Bill #71" [stitched] in there, so we have some cool details. And I was like, let's just go with the loafers and have some fun."
Deryk Engelland, Vegas Golden Knights: Gaitano Brand got the whole team some suits. I just wanted something bold and they were able to have it done before the Awards. I picked out the red and everything, so it turned out awesome.

Boyle Hall

Brian Boyle, New Jersey Devils: "This is Gentleman's Playbook. It was made for me for this event a couple of weeks ago. I had to get clearance from the boss [wife Lauren]. I kind of wanted a lighter side tuxedo. I didn't think it was going to be this sparkly, but we're alright. It's Vegas."
Taylor Hall, New Jersey Devils: "My stylist from Gentleman's Playbook showed me a few patterns and I picked this one out. I thought it worked out very well."

Duggan and Kessel

Amanda Kessel, U.S. Women's Olympic team:"Mine was last minute. I've been looking for the last week and I couldn't find [a dress] and I was going to re-wear and right before I left I found this at a little boutique in Florida."
Meghan Duggan, U.S. Women's Olympic team: "Mine was kind of last minute too. We were texting about it. I just went on google and looked up what women wore the last couple years on the red carpet and it was just something simple, cocktail, can't go wrong with black."

Barkov Luongo

Aleksander Barkov, Florida Panthers: "In Finland, a couple guys did it for me. Nothing fancy. They asked what kind of trophy I got nominated for and I just wanted something good enough to be here."
Roberto Luongo, Florida Panthers: "It's Zegna. They said [the NHL Awards] was black tie, so I wore a black suit. That pretty much sums it up."

Keller Barzal MacKinnon

Clayton Keller, Arizona Coyotes: "My dad is a businessman, so he picked it out for me. I trusted him. He's pretty stylish, so I trusted him. I like the color blue and I think it looks pretty good."
Mathew Barzal, New York Islanders:"There's a designer in New York my agency hooked me up with, Adrian Black, he did a great job. He gave me a couple options and I really liked the navy. He said he was going to put a nice shirt and tie together."
Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche:"I got it in Halifax. I like blue so I just wanted a cool blue suit. I went a couple of weeks ago and picked it out. It wasn't too hard. I'm not too picky. I wanted something simple. I wasn't going to try to be a hero or anything. Guys look good [in their flashy suits], I just don't think I could pull it off."

Hedman Kopitar McDavid

Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay Lightning: "I picked it out. The guy I've been using at Gentleman's Playbook the last few years, he's been great. He gave me a few options. I really fell for this one. I'm representing my favorite color and my team color. The shoes too, it's all sparkle. You never know when you'll get another chance to walk a red carpet in Vegas, so you have to look the part."
Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings: "I was dressed by RW & Co. and I didn't have a whole lot of say. I just asked for blue because that's my favorite color."
Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers: "It's just very basic. I wanted a standard black suit. I had it already, so it was nothing. It's what was clean."

OReilly Zucker Couturier

Ryan O'Reilly, Buffalo Sabres: "This is RW & Co. in Montreal. They reached out to do a suit for me and they did an excellent job. I met with them yesterday and had a couple options and I decided to go with the maroon. It's great. It's really well cut. I like blues a lot. I wear a lot of blue and that's what I was leaning toward and I don't have a maroon suit. It's different but I think it's nice, not too bright."
Jason Zucker, Minnesota Wild: "I had a bit of help from my wife [Carly] and from a guy named Tom who does all the custom suits at Gentleman's Playbook. We had a lot of fun with it, tried to do something a little bit crazy but not too flashy."
Sean Couturier, Philadelphia Flyers: "It's actually my grandfather who does my suits, so I went and saw him and tried to get out of the comfort zone for the event. This is what I came up with. My grandfather used to do a lot of suits for professional athletes in Montreal back in the day and since I've started in the league he's been taking care of me and this is his product. He came up with the idea [for the matching bow tie and jacket] and we tried it."
