NEWARK, NJ – Despite a 31-save performance from Tristan Jarry and a two-goal comeback helped by a goal & assist from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on his record-setting night, the Edmonton Oilers couldn't complete the perfect New York road trip on Tuesday at the Prudential Center, ending their seven-game road win streak to begin the season in the process with a 4-3 shootout defeat to the New Jersey Devils.
"I think 'battled through' is the right term for us," Kasperi Kapanen said. "I don't think that was necessarily our best game today. They had a push in the second period. Props to us for clawing our way back and getting that point, but I don't think we necessarily deserve that second one tonight."
Playing in his 1,038th game with the Oilers to set a new franchise record, Nugent-Hopkins assisted Evan Bouchard's ninth goal of the season to open the scoring in the first period before getting a lucky bounce on the power play to calm the Devils at the end of their dominant second period, where Jarry's shutout streak came to an end at 153:59 after New Jersey scored three times and outshot the Oilers 16-3 in the frame.
"They have good skill; they knew how to forecheck as we do and track as we do, so there are turnovers, and they're going the other way," Head Coach Mike Babcock said. "I didn't think we handled that at all in the second period. We knew what we were getting ourselves into and we weren't good enough. So that's on us, not on them.
"I'll give them credit, they got good players and played hard and all that, but I thought we should've been better in the second period, and we weren't."
But the Devils were undisciplined before the intermission, taking two quick penalties and allowing Leon Draisaitl to tie the game one minute into the final stanza with his 13th goal of the campaign, with Connor McDavid picking up an assist to extend his NHL record season-opening assist streak to 16 games.
Following a frenetic five minutes of overtime, Devils forward Arseny Gritsyuk provided the decisive tally in the shootout, handing the Devils their fifth straight win on home ice and ending Edmonton's road win streak to begin the campaign at seven games.
Kasperi Kapanen had two assists, while Evan Bouchard finished with a goal & assist.
The Oilers finished their three-game New York trip with five of a possible six points, dropping their record to 11-2-3 as they return home to host the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place on Thursday at 7:00 PM MT.
"I thought it was a good trip for us, but you obviously want to grab all six if you can," Draisaitl said. "Shootout is a toss-up sometimes, but a good trip all in all for us and we'll move on."
