EDMONTON, AB – No fuel for the fire.
Behind a 24-save shutout from Tristan Jarry, multiple assists for Connor McDavid & Nugent Hopkins and depth scoring from Mathieu Joseph, Kasperi Kapanen and Alex Formenton, the Edmonton Oilers earned a 4-0 victory over the Calgary Flames to take this season’s first Battle of Alberta on Wednesday at Rogers Place.
Jarry held it down from the blue paint by stopping all 24 shots he faced to post his 24th career shutout, improving his record to 3-1-2 this season and helping the Oilers bounce back from a two-game losing skid in the final game of their five-game homestand.
"I think we just gotta keep growing," Jarry said. "Every day, there are obviously things that you could take away and learn from, and just being able to do that is huge. Going out east, it's a couple good teams that we're about to play, so just kind of solidifying that and keeping to our game."
Joseph opened the scoring for the Oilers 7:26 into the first period before Ekholm doubled Edmonton’s advantage less than five minutes into the middle frame, putting the Blue & Orange on course to put an end to Calgary’s recent four-game win streak.
Kapanen’s power-play goal less than a minute into the third period was followed up only 21 seconds later by Formenton, who capitalized on some hard work from Jason Dickinson creating a turnover in Calgary’s zone to cap off the scoring in a 4-0 victory.
"We wanted to win the game, first and foremost, but I thought the game was pretty solid," said McDavid, who set the new NHL best season-opening assist streak at 13 games with two assists. "It was what we needed to do tonight. Calgary had been playing really well and scoring lots of goals, so we had to defend hard and find a way to get a win."
The Oilers will now hit the road for three games in New York, starting with a matinée clash against the Islanders on Saturday in the first of back-to-back games.
