Edmonton hosts the Sabres to close out their homestand

THIRD PERIOD

0.0: GAME OVER! A hard first two periods from Buffalo were undone in extraordinary fahsion by Edmonton in the final frame, scoring five times to earn a 8-3 victory in the final game of their four-game homestand at Rogers Place. Ekholm was extraordinary as well with a goal and two assists along with Leon Draisaitl, and Connor McDavid has a quiet four-assist performance. Hyman scores twice and could reach 50 goals on Saturday night in Toronto when the Oilers face the Maple Leafs.

9.0: CONNOR BROWN IN ON THE ACTION! The winger buries a rebound late in the game for his second Oilers goal.

3:02: McLEOD MAKES IT SEVEN! The young forward fires one far side on Lukkonen on a two-on-one with Evander Kane to score his 12th of the season. The marker is unassisted after he picked up a turnover by the Sabres in the neutral zone.

4:42: HYMAN HAS FORTY-EIGHT! And the Oilers are well ahead now up by three goals as Hyman rips one high over the right shoulder of Luukkonen. McDavid picks up his fourth assist, while Draisaitl gets the secondary helper and now has three points. 6-3.

6:55: STUUUUU's big saves on Peterka keep this a two-goal game. The Sabres have decided to take their timeout with 51 seconds left on the power play.

8:07: Corey Perry takes an undisciplined slashing penalty while waiting for the Sabres to break out.

14:17: VI-KING EKHOLM! WHAT A GOAL! McDavid eludes a defenceman to set up an odd-man rush before he offloads it to Draisaitl, who puts it on a platter for Ekholm to one-time into the top corner for his second goal of the night and third point.

Ekholm scores his second of the night on a monstrous slap shot

15:22: DARNELL DELIVERS THE LEAD! No. 25 slides one through traffic along the ice all the way from the blueline and it finds the back of the net under Luukkonen, who didn't have a great view on the puck while being stuck in a half-butterfly. Troy Stecher made a fast-reaction pass over to his D partner and picks up his first Oilers point with the assist on Nurse's ninth goal of the season. 4-3 Edmonton.

17:58: Oilers power play! Peterka is in the box for hooking into the hands of Bouchard at the blueline.

20:00: GAME ON! All tied at 3-3.

20:00: The third period is coming up!

SECOND PERIOD

47.5: HYMAN UP AND OVER! Ekholm puts a high shot on goal that Hyman redirects over Luukkonen with the winger himself delivering the screen. Hyman's 47th goal of the campaign makes it 3-3 heading into the second intermission.

3:04: Sabres re-take their lead. Skinner will want that one back after Peterka's effort slides on the ice and is able to sneak under his right pad. 3-2.

8:52: The Oilers and Sabres trade strong spells in each other's zones and Edmonton gets a great chance to score on a two-on-one between Draisaitl and EKholm, but the Geman can't slide it under the sliding Sabres' defenceman. Ekholm has certainly been active offensively this game.

15:28: Quickly after that goal, Cody Ceci is called for hooking Josh Benson along the benches.

15:34: EKHOLM DRAGS AND BURIES IT! The defenceman looks off Evander Kane on a two-on-one and drags it through the stick of a Buffalo defender before firing it far side. Luukkonen was caught off guard by the sweet showing of skill from the Swede. 2-2!

Ekholm toe-drags & snipes to tie the game at 2-2 in the second

20:00: GAME ON!

20:00: The second period is coming up!

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: END OF 1 | Sabres 2, Oilers 1.

1:05: LEON FIRES AND SCORES! The German turns around and lets go of a half-clapper that trickles through Luukkonen at the near post to draw the Oilers back into it before the intermission with a power-play goal. Nugent-Hopkins and Bouchard get the assists on Draisaitl's 35th of the season and second goal in as many games.

Draisaitl tallies his 35th of the season on the power play

1:46: Connor Clifton finds himself in the box for hooking.

3:26: Buffa-GOAL. Victor Olofsson spins and fires one top shelf. 2-0 Sabres.

7:23: OFFSIDE! Rasmus Dahlin scores, but the play is challenged for offside by the Oilers bench and it's quickly overturned. It remains 1-0 Sabres.

8:44: The Oilers load up the top line and it nearly leads to a goal off a three-on-one started by Leon Draisaitl in the d-zone. Zach Hyman couldn't finish off McDavid's pass on a one-timer.

9:58: Skinner stumbles on a lateral move on the previous play before settling himself and making a big blocker save on a two-on-one during the next sequence. Great work by the goalie to collect himself.

11:34: Peterka draws a tripping penalty on Zach Hyman after scoring the opening goal. Buffalo goes to the power play.

12:54: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen makes a shoulder save on a sharp shot from Sam Carrick meant for the top-right corner. The netminder has been the best goalie in the NHL since Jan. 1 and has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 13 consecutive starts.

18:22: The Sabres strike early. The puck is flicked over to JJ Peterka by Alex Tuch for a wrist shot that beats Stuart Skinner to make it 1-0 for Buffalo.

20:00: GAME ON!

20:00: The first period is about to begin!
