Jacob Markstrom carries Canucks past Oilers

EDMONTON -- Jacob Markstrom made 42 saves and Bo Horvat scored the lone goal in the shootout to help the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Saturday.
Sven Baertschi and Alexandre Burrows scored for the Canucks (17-18-3), who have won three straight.
"We played a great overall game tonight, there are obviously things we still need to work on, but we should be happy with that win," Horvat said. "Both of our goalies have been amazing, and [Markstrom] was especially incredible tonight. He made a great glove save in the last minute to keep us in it. He's been huge all year for us in important times and it was great to see him get the win."

Connor McDavid tied the game with 1:33 remaining and Drake Caggiula scored for the Oilers (19-12-7). Cam Talbot made 30 saves.
"We were flat. We were flat, our execution was poor, we played the game standing still," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "We want to pass the puck from one stationary player to another stationary guy to another stationary player. We didn't go after it and skate against a team that played an overtime game the night before. When you stand around and try to do it the easy way, it doesn't work."
Markus Granlund appeared to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead at 12:12 of the first period on a shot from the point, but the Oilers issued a coach's challenge for goaltender interference on Brandon Sutter in front, which was successful and the goal was waved off.
Burrows scored at 5:43 of the second period to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead, finishing off a play after creating a turnover behind the Oilers net. Edmonton used its coach's challenge again on goaltender interference against Horvath, but the goal stood.

The Oilers tied the game 1-1 at 12:31, three seconds after a holding penalty to Vancouver defenseman Nikita Tryamkin expired, when Caggiula took a pass in the slot from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and shot it past Markstrom.
"They have a really skilled offensive team and a really good power play," Markstrom said. "Even though they had a lot of shots on the board, I though most of them were from the outside or from a bad angle. I thought our guys did a really good job with rebounds and stuff like that."
In the third, Baertschi took a pass in front from Horvat, who drove wide on Gryba and cut to the net and scored at 4:57 to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead.
McDavid tied the game 2-2 at 18:27 on the power play with Daniel Sedin in the penalty box serving a hooking penalty.
Markstrom stopped Mark Letestu and Leon Draisaitl in the shootout and Nugent-Hopkins shot wide.

Goal of the game

On a power play, Leon Draisaitl found McDavid with a quick pass and he scored to tie the game 2-2 at 18:27 of the third period.

Save of the game

Markstrom made an outstanding glove save on Jordan Eberle with 51.8 seconds left in the third period.

Unsung performance of the game

While on the penalty kill, forward Matt Hendricks dove across the crease to break up a centering pass from Granlund at 18:50 of the second period.

Highlight of the game

Horvat took the puck wide on Gryba, went to the net and slid it over to Baertschi in front for the go-ahead goal at 4:57 of the third period.

Need to know

It was the first time the Canucks have won three straight since winning their first four games of the season. … The Oilers have not won on New Year's Eve since Dec. 31, 1985, when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in Edmonton (2-15-1).
