3 questions facing Dallas Stars

NHL.com is providing in-depth roster, prospect and fantasy analysis for each of its 32 teams from Aug. 1-Sept. 1. Today, three important questions facing the Dallas Stars.

1. Can Tyler Seguin stay healthy?

The 34-year-old forward has dealt with some brutal injuries over the past two seasons. Between hip surgery in 2024-25 and ACL surgery last season, Seguin has been limited to 47 games over the past two years. When he is healthy, however, he can still provide offense for the Stars.

Seguin had 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 27 games before his injury on Dec. 2 cost him the rest of last season. In 2024-25, he had 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 20 games (he had hip surgery after his 19th game before returning for Dallas’ regular-season finale on April 16, 2025).

Seguin is entering the last of an eight-year, $78.8 million contract ($9.85 million average annual value) he signed with Dallas on Sept. 13, 2018. He deserves good health. If he can stay in the lineup, he can put up the numbers.

2. Is their window closing?

The Stars are among the NHL’s most talented teams, but not one of its youngest. Forward Matt Duchene is 35 years old. Seguin is 34. Jamie Benn, their captain, is 37 and returning on a one-year contract. Mikko Rantanen will turn 30 on Oct. 29.

Dallas does have its share of younger talent, too, including forwards Wyatt Johnston (23), Roope Hintz (29) and Jason Robertson (27), and defensemen Miro Heiskanen (27) and Thomas Harley (turns 25 on Aug. 19). But the Stanley Cup Final has eluded the Stars in recent seasons outside of the one playoffs held in the bubble in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They advanced to the Western Conference Final in back-to-back seasons before losing to the Minnesota Wild in the first round last season. Time runs out for every team, but Dallas believes it can win as currently constructed and doesn’t want to wait any longer.

3. Will Jason Robertson sign long-term?

Yes, the ink has barely dried on Robertson’s one-year, $12 million contract he signed on July 21, but the Stars will be doing everything they can to keep the 27-year-old forward for much longer.

The sides can start negotiating his next contract on Jan. 1, 2027. Until then, Robertson will likely do exactly what he’s done the past six seasons -- perform at a high level. He led Dallas last season with 96 points (45 goals, 51 assists) in 82 games.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if a deal gets done in January. Or at all.
