The goalie made it known publicly on Aug. 27 that he has asked to be traded from the Jets. He is entering the third season of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract he signed with Winnipeg on Oct. 9. 2023, but it doesn't appear he will play out that deal in Winnipeg.
"With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm by request. My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family."
Hellebuyck suggested a change might be in order after a season that saw the Jets miss the playoffs. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said Winnipeg was listening to trade offers for the gold medal winner with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Hellebuyck has played his entire 11-year career with the Jets since being selected in the fifth round (No. 130) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
“To take the step back that we did this year, it felt very wrong,” Hellebuyck said at his end-of-season media availability on April 17. “From the Presidents’ Trophy to this just felt that it should never happen, and it did. I’m not saying I’m not a big part of it too, I am. But when you look at the future, it takes time, it takes time to reevaluate those things.”
If the Jets were to move Hellebuyck, the return would need to be substantial.
For now, he’s in Winnipeg.
“Certainly, as an organization we’re going to listen,” Cheveldayoff said. “Everyone saw his press conference at the end of the year, he was passionate. Certainly, in our exit meetings we had some frank conversations as well, but again, what happens in those meetings certainly stays private.”
