Jones makes 26 saves, Kraken shut down Kings for first win

LOS ANGELES -- Brandon Tanev and Alex Wennberg scored in the second period for the Seattle Kraken in a 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday.

Jaden Schwartz had a power-play goal for the Kraken (1-0-1), who were playing the second game of a back to back following a 5-4 overtime loss at the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday. Martin Jones made 26 saves.
"In six periods of hockey, we played 5 1/2 good periods," Schwartz said. "There are a lot of good things to build on."
Alex Iafallo scored on the power play and Jonathan Quick allowed three goals on 21 shots for the Kings (0-2-0).
"We have some work to do," Los Angeles center Phillip Danault said. "We're not playing a full 60 minutes. We're kind of sloppy with a couple passes, and little details we haven't capitalized as well. I mean, it's not that we're not trying. We tried really hard today, but it wasn't enough."
Tanev took the puck out of the corner and beat Quick with a shot at the near post into the top netting to put Seattle in front 2-1 at 6:08 of the second period.

Wennberg made it 3-1 at 13:08, scoring between Quick's legs from the edge of the crease.
"They play a difficult system and a trap that's tough to break. But I think when the simplicity of the game of getting pucks in, forechecking and being physical makes it easier," Tanev said. "I think when you're out there with guys that understand the way we need to play it makes the game easier, and you just read off each other and communicate try to make things easy."
Adam Larsson scored short-handed into an empty net at 18:59 of the third period for the 4-1 final.
Schwartz backhanded in the rebound of a shot by Jordan Eberle to put the Kraken ahead 1-0 at 5:21 of the first period. Seattle was 1-for-6 on the power play after scoring on three of five chances against Anaheim.
"You have to work for your chances. Special teams gave us a lot of momentum," Schwartz said.
Los Angeles committed two penalties in the opening 3:53 of the game, the first for too many men on the ice and the other when Blake Lizotte tripped Jared McCann in the offensive zone. It prevented the Kings from establishing any rhythm and continued a trend from the season-opening 4-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights when they gave up five power plays.
"Game management," Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. "Three O-zone penalties tonight, game management. It's something we've been harping and harping on, and those are essentially impossible situations to practice so they've got to take care of it."

Iafallo tied it 1-1 at 7:43, scoring four seconds into a power play. He intercepted a pass behind the net and scored on a wraparound that went between Jones' legs.
The Kings went 1-for-5 on the power play.
The Kraken had a goal waved off for a high stick at 19:53 of the first after Matty Beniers tipped in Justin Schultz's pass from the blue line. The on-ice call was confirmed following a video review.
Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke, the No. 8 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut. He had one shot on goal in 15:17 of ice time.
"We dressed six defensemen tonight. I know he wasn't six, pretty sure he wasn't five and I don't believe he was four either. So, that's what I thought of him. I thought he had a real good night," McLellan said.
NOTES: Schwartz has seven points (two goals, six assists) in his past six games against the Kings. … Seattle forwards Andre Burakovsky and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had an assist. They each have two points (one goal, one assist) in their first two games. … Seattle forward Shane Wright was scratched after the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft made his NHL debut Wednesday. … Beniers had an assist, giving him at least one point in 11 of his first 12 NHL games. He is the third teenager, joining Joe Sakic and Jonathan Toews, and sixth player in NHL history to do so (Sakic, Dmitri Kvartalnov, Toews, Rob Gaudreau, Teemu Selanne).
