The Columbus Blue Jackets are teaming up with local physical education (PE) teachers to help fight childhood obesity by offering a free, hockey-themed wellness curriculum that will reach 30,000 students in 100 central Ohio elementary schools during the 2018-19 academic year. The Blue Jackets Power Play Challenge encompasses fitness and nutrition challenges, student incentives, street hockey instruction and equipment donation as well as opportunity for a STEM-focused field trip to an OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rink.

After piloting Power Play Challenge last spring in 20 Columbus City Schools and reaching 4,000 students, the 2018-19 program is adding 80 schools to benefit 26,000 more children. This year, school districts in Dublin, Olentangy and Worthington join Columbus City Schools in incorporating the program in their PE curriculum.
"Like other Blue Jackets' no-cost education resources, this program provides tools to assist teachers in their classroom (or gymnasium) and provide learning incentives," said Andee Boiman, Blue Jackets Director of Fan Development and Community Programs. "Our goal with Power Play Challenge was to create a robust initiative that uses the sport we love to connect with kids and give teachers a fun way to teach healthy habits."
The Power Play Challenge is designed to meet Ohio state standards for physical education curriculum for grades 2-5 and aims to keep children active while encouraging healthy choices. The program is supported by a joint initiative between the NHL and the NHL Players Association in order to help grow the game of hockey. For more information, visit
