Cal Petersen made 31 saves in his season debut for the Kings (19-32-5), who have lost four straight and are 1-8-1 in their past 10 games.
"A little too much vanilla from a lot of guys, and obviously the lack of offense comes back to bite us," Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "We are desperately searching for some help offensively. There have been a lot of players who have played a lot of games for us, and they haven't hit the score sheet or even the chance sheet."
The Devils took a 3-0 lead when Nikita Gusev, Coleman and Palmieri scored in a span of 5:05 of the second period.
Gusev scored with a one-timer from low in the left face-off circle at 5:38, Coleman scored a power-play goal off a wrist shot from the right circle at 7:35, and Palmieri redirected a shot in the slot by Andy Greene at 10:43.
"[Power play] is a role that I've played throughout my career, but I've been surrounded by talented offensive players so I haven't gotten as many looks as I would want, but I'm going to make the most of my time out there," said Coleman, whose power-play goal was his first of the season. "All it takes is that one chance and we were able to capitalize today. Anytime you can win a special teams' game, more times than not, you're going to win the game."
Blackwood stopped Kings forward Anze Kopitar on a penalty shot at 12:37 of the second period.
"[Kopitar] kind of had a breakaway before (the penalty shot) and I just tried to get out, get big," Blackwood said. "I wanted to make the first move to make him try to beat me or try and place a perfect shot. I was fortunate to be able to read that one."
Said Kopitar, "I was trying to go over the pad and he stopped it. I haven't seen any of the other games they played before, but it seemed like [Blackwood] was in the zone."
