Petersen set an NCAA single-game record on March 6, 2015, when he made 87 saves for Notre Dame in a 4-3 five-overtime loss to Massachusetts in a Hockey East playoff game. That came at the end of his freshman season, when he had taken the starting job and begun a streak of 90 consecutive starts.
The Buffalo Sabres had selected the native of Waterloo, Iowa, in the fifth round (No. 129) of the 2013 NHL Draft. But he opted to become a free agent after his junior season at Notre Dame and signed with the Los Angeles Kings on July 1, 2017.

Petersen spent all of the 2017-18 season with Ontario of the American Hockey League and was sent back for the start of the 2018-19 season. But an injury to Kings backup Jack Campbell led to his recall on Nov. 12, 2018, and he made his NHL debut the following day against the Toronto Maple Leafs, allowing one goal on 16 shots in relief of Jonathan Quick.
Petersen's first NHL start came against the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 16, 2018, and he made 34 saves in a 2-1 win.
The Kings sent Petersen back to Ontario after he went 5-4-1 with a 2.61 goals-against average and .924 save percentage. He spent the rest of the 2018-19 season in the AHL but had impressed the Kings enough to earn a three-year contract he signed on July 16, 2019.
Petersen began 2019-20 with Ontario, where he was selected to the 2020 AHL All-Star Game, before a trade that sent Campbell to Toronto on Feb. 5, 2020, opened the door for Petersen's NHL return. After losing three of his first four decisions, he went 4-0-0 in his next four starts, allowing a total of seven goals, to finish 5-3-0 with a 2.64 GAA and .922 save percentage.
