Nugent-Hopkins' 3rd-period goal lifts Oilers to win

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Connor McDavid had an assist for his 140th point of the season, and the Edmonton Oilers gained in the Pacific Division after recovering for a 5-4 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena on Monday.

McDavid became the 10th player in NHL history with a 140-point season. He is the first player with at least 140 points since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1995-96. He is also the seventh with at least 60 goals and 80 assists in a season.
"I saw someone grab a puck and I said, `Which milestone is that?,'" Edmonton forward Nick Bjugstad said. "You just like being on the same side as these guys [McDavid and Leon Draisaitl]."
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had the go-ahead goal and an assist, Draisaitl scored his 300th NHL goal, and Evan Bouchard also had a goal and an assist for the Oilers (42-23-9), who extended their point streak to seven games (6-0-1). Jack Campbell made 29 saves.
Edmonton moved within three points of the Los Angeles Kings for second in the Pacific Division.
"In the second period we locked it down, built a two-goal lead, but then we had a couple of shifts in the third period we'd like back. But we got it under control at the end," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "It's not a perfect game, but we walked out with two points and we'll take it."

Matias Maccelli and Barrett Hayton each scored twice, Lawson Crouse had three assists and Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves for the Coyotes (27-35-13), who have lost five straight (0-3-2), including 4-3 in a shootout against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.
Nugent-Hopkins gave Edmonton a 5-4 lead at 12:05 of the third period on the power play after Arizona rallied with back-to-back goals from Maccelli at 3:52 and Hayton at 4:50 to tie it 4-4.
"They kind of hemmed us in on a few shifts [in the third] and we kind of we lost our momentum, but you weather the storm," said Oilers forward Zach Hyman, who scored his 32nd goal in the first period. "We got some big special teams goals, and that changes the game. We got a big two points, and we'll keep rolling."
Maccelli made it 1-0 at 3:50 of the first period, but Hyman scored six seconds into an Edmonton power play at 4:40 to tie it 1-1, redirecting McDavid's pass to the left post.
Maccelli had his first NHL multigoal game while defending against McDavid's line.
"He had two goals playing McDavid, and you should get an award just for that," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "He played really good defensively, and now he's learning to put more pucks on the net and he is successful."

EDM@ARI: Draisaitl snaps home a shot for his 300th

Hayton put Arizona ahead 2-1 at 12:59 before Bouchard scored 35 seconds later at 13:34 to tie it 2-2.
Darnell Nurse gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead at 18:10 with their 14th short-handed goal of the season before Draisaitl's goal at 14:32 of the second period extended it to 4-2. Coyotes defenseman Josh Brown's clearing attempt went directly onto Draisaitl's stick for a one-timer from the right face-off circle and his 300th NHL goal.
"Yeah, it's cool that [No. 300] is a nice milestone to hit," Draisaitl said. "Hopefully that wasn't [the last]."
Maccelli cut it to 4-3 at 3:52 of the third, tapping in a loose puck in the crease.
"There were a couple of shifts in the third where they made us pay, and there were couple of individual situations around our net that can be handled better," Woodcroft said. "They've got some dangerous people there, they're a good, young, skilled team."

Hayton then tied it 4-4 at 4:50 with a backhand off a Nick Schmaltz rebound.
"Obviously, the last two games our fight in the third period has been really good," Hayton said. "But the first period cost us tonight. I'm super proud of the fight we put up, but it's frustrating giving up that first period like we did."
