It came more than five years after the Panthers selected the 6-foot-5, 217-pound defenseman from London, Ontario, in the sixth round (No. 152) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
The Panthers chose Brown after his second season with Oshawa of the Ontario Hockey League, when he had 16 points, all assists, and was plus-17 in 68 games. Brown played two more seasons with Oshawa, helping it win the Memorial Cup in 2015, before turning pro and playing most of the 2015-16 season with Manchester of the ECHL.
After playing the next two seasons with Springfield in the American Hockey League, Brown got his chance in 2018-19 when injuries left Florida shorthanded on the blue line. He scored his first NHL goal in a 6-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on March 10, 2019.
Brown spent all of 2019-20 with Florida, getting eight points (three goals, five assists) in 58 games before the season was paused on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
