Forward Adam Johnson scored two goals for Pittsburgh, which got one goal each from Greg McKegg, Conor Sheary and Jake Guentzel. Penguins starter Matt Murray made 19 saves on 22 shots through the second period, and Tristan Jarry made 13 saves in relief.
Darren Helm, Ben Street and Matt Lorito scored for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard allowed three goals on 25 shots in 32:22, and Tom McCollum made nine saves in relief.
