Ottawa outshot Detroit 35-21 in the game, including 13-5 in the third period.
"It's always tough when you're playing against a defensively responsible team when you go down 2-0 in the first period," Senators forward Zack Smith said. "I thought we did a good job keeping our heads up and pushing forward. We had lots of shots, but [Bernier] played well. He didn't give up a lot of second chances in front of the net and we couldn't find a way to get one past him tonight. It was a bit frustrating."
Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin did not play because of an oblique muscle injury, but Blashill said before the game there's a chance he could play in Detroit's next game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
"When you lose guys, you feel it way more if guys don't step up," Blashill said. "When guys step up and play great hockey, then you don't feel those losses as much. We've got a number of forwards that, I think, on a consistent basis, would like more ice time."
