Hurricanes at Flames | Recap

CALGARY -- Yegor Sharangovich scored to break a tie at 15:32 of the third period, and the Calgary Flames held on for a 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday.

Sharangovich one-timed a cross-ice saucer pass from Morgan Frost past Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi for his second goal of the season.

“We need some good things to happen, because they’re putting in a lot of good work in different areas and tonight it was nice to see them get rewarded against the team that is the standard right now,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “We were in a situation where they were (playing) back-to-back too, so I think by making them go back for pucks, like they did as the game went on, was important for us.”

Frost had a goal and an assist for the Flames (2-6-0), who won on home ice for the first time this season. Matvei Gridin also scored and Devin Cooley made 34 saves.

Cooley had given up seven goals on 30 shots during a 7-3 loss in Colorado to the Avalanche on Oct. 8 in his most recent appearance.

“Every second that you spend thinking about yourself through your conscious brain, it distracts you from what’s happening out in front of you and that’s what I’ve been doing,” Cooley said. “And it helps a lot when you’re working and you’re learning, but the game is way too fast out there to let your conscious brain decide. I’m a really bad conscious-brain goalie, if that makes sense, so I just let my unconscious brain do everything. Don’t think about anything, don’t have too much fun, don’t smile too much, just shut it off. Then I just start making saves.”

Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jalen Chatfield scored for the Hurricanes (7-2-1), who had won seven straight games and a franchise-record five in a row on the road. Bussi made 31 saves.

“You’ve got to figure it out,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “This is the no-one-feels-sorry-for-you league. We just regroup. We still created a ton of offense. (We hit) three or four goalposts. This game could have looked different, but I still would have felt the same, because we’re giving up way too much.”

CAR@CGY: Kotkaniemi gives Hurricanes lead in 2nd period

Kotkaniemi scored his second goal in as many games at 6:09 of the second period when he lifted a rebound over Cooley’s right pad to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.

“He just tapped it in there,” said Brind’Amour, while crediting Kotkaniemi’s linemates Nicolas Deslauriers and Eric Robinson for their work on setting up the goal. “The other guys were creating all the loose pucks. That line was pretty effective for us playing in the right end of the rink and that’s what we need a little more of.”

Gridin countered with his first goal of the season at 18:30 to pull the Flames into a 1-1 tie when he scored on a wrist shot from the high slot to the top corner over Bussi’s glove.

“That was my best game so far this season, so I’ve got to just build on it,” Gridin said. “How I moved my feet today was a good feeling inside me.”

Playing in his 400th NHL game, Frost tapped in a pass from Zayne Parekh for a power-play goal at 19:39 to give Calgary a 2-1 lead. Joel Farabee started the three-way passing play to record his team-leading fifth assist.

“They’ve made some nice plays on it, so they are the guys that we expect to be the difference makers for us in close games and they were that tonight,” Huska said. “We need the power play to score. We’re a team that we don’t find the back of the net all that easily.”

CAR@CGY: Frost puts Flames on top with PPG in 2nd period

Just 17 seconds later at 19:56, Chatfield’s shot from the far boards through traffic found its way into the top corner over Cooley’s glove to make it 2-2.

“I felt like in the third, they turned the tides on us, for sure,” Carolina forward Jordan Martinook said. “We just probably gave up way too much. It felt like, especially in the third, they started putting it on us a lot and they were just playing simple like how we usually play.”

NOTES: Deslauriers was in the lineup in place of forward Mark Jankowski, who was scratched with a lower-body injury. “I don’t really know what happened,” said Brind’Amour of Jankowski, who extended his goal streak to six games in Carolina’s 3-2 road win against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. “We sent him home to get looked at, so I don’t know. I don’t have any other update than that.” … Matt Coronato played in his 200th NHL game.
