CGY@NSH: Granlund ties game late, pots OT winner

NASHVILLE -- Mikael Granlund tied the game with 0.1 seconds left in the third period and then scored in overtime to give the Nashville Predators a 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames at Bridgestone Arena on Thursday.

On the tying goal, Filip Forsberg passed the puck to the front of the net and Granlund beat Flames goalie David Rittich on the blocker side.
"When it went in, I had no clue if it was a good goal," Granlund said. "I was just trying to find a television] screen to see 'Was that a good goal?' Thankfully it was a good goal, but you were kind of nervous because I had no clue. I just heard the buzzer and the puck went in."

Granlund dangled to the middle of the ice and scored 1:20 into overtime. The Predators (32-23-8) pulled within one point of the Flames for the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference with their third straight win.
"It was pretty crazy," Nashville captain Roman Josi said. "They scored one late, we tie it up late and win in [overtime]. It was fun. The crowd was into it, we were obviously into it and it's a big game too. They're right ahead of us. It was a really fun game."

Granlund, Parayko win it for Predators and Blues

The Flames (33-25-7) had won their previous two games. Mikael Backlund had three points (one goal, two assists).
"It's a game of inches, right?" Calgary coach Geoff Ward said. "You've got to play it right to the last whistle and every play's important. It was unfortunate, but we'll take the point for sure. We'll be happy with probably like 98 percent of the hockey game. I thought we played a real, real solid hockey game tonight outside of a couple of plays."
Andrew Mangiapane gave the Flames a 3-2 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the third period after Backlund dangled through the Predators defense.
"[Backlund] was awesome," Ward said. "Absolutely awesome. He's been playing really well. That line has been good. We're relying a lot on them, they're doing an awful lot of good things for us."
Josi scored for the Predators to tie the game 2-2 at 14:30 of the third period on a wrist shot from the left circle.
Colton Sissons gave the Predators a 1-0 lead on a shot from the slot with 31.2 seconds remaining in the first period.
"I think we've been trending in the right direction for sure," Sissons said. "I think this game will definitely give us some confidence and give us a little bit of juice of energy. We'll take that and run."
Rasmus Andersson scored for the Flames to tie the game 1-1 26 seconds into the second period on a pass from Backlund.
Backlund gave the Flames a 2-1 lead at 3:48 of the second period. He shot the puck toward the net, and it bounced off of Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm past goalie Juuse Saros.
Flames defenseman Mark Giordano returned to the lineup after missing 10 games because of a hamstring injury.
"It's my first one back so there's obviously some things, some rust and you need to be better," said Giordano, who played 21:34. "As the game wore on, I felt more and more comfortable with the puck and making plays."

They said it

"It was a tough way to lose. There's no doubt about that. I thought we did a lot of good things. Great play by [Backlund] to [Mangiapane]. The puck seemed at the end like it was bouncing all around our net, and they whacked it home. I think there was 0.1 left on the clock or whatever it was. Tough point to lose, but I thought we did a lot of good things and we'll move on to the next one." -- Flames captain Mark Giordano
"I think it can if you're in a situation like this again where we had to come from behind to be able to tie the game in the third period, later in the third period and then have to find a way to be able to tie it again. Twice we had to come from behind, so I think when you get in those situations again it can certainly have a positive effect, and those reinforce a lot of the things we're talking about."-- Predators coach John Hynes on if a win like this can help propel them going forward
