Flames rally in third, defeat Predators in shootout

NASHVILLE -- Matthew Tkachuk and Sean Monahan scored in the shootout to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 win against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday.
The Flames (5-4-0) scored two goals in the third period to tie the game 2-2.
Pekka Rinne made 30 saves for the Predators (4-3-2), who fell to 3-0-1 at home.

Tkachuk scored to make it 2-1 at 10:35 of the third period with his third goal.

"Well after a couple tough games at home, this is exactly what you need right now," Tkachuk said. "This is good vibes, this is everybody feeling confident, a great team win, great goaltending and a comeback. Whenever you get a comeback win, you feel pretty good about yourself. A win in general, you feel good about yourself.
"But tonight, for some reason, it was special. Just to be down two in the third against the Western Conference champs last year, I mean you don't have to talk about how good they are. I mean, they are. They're so good. And they played to that caliber, and we wore them down in the second half of the game."

Micheal Ferland tied it 2-2 at 12:55 on a rush with Johnny Gaudreau. Ferland got behind the Predators defense to receive a pass from Gaudreau on the rush, and beat Rinne for his second goal.
"It was a huge character win," Ferland said. "We came back after the first period being down 2-0. We thought we'd just stick with it and keep battling and battling. We just kept putting pucks on net, and we battled our way back."
Filip Forsberg gave the Predators a 1-0 lead at 6:29 of the first period on the power play. Roman Josi took the initial shot after corralling a loose puck, and Forsberg beat Mike Smith on the rebound for his seventh goal.
"I think the power play early on might have given us a little bit of a feeling that we were playing well 5-on-5," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "And I thought we needed to play better. That was my message throughout the whole game is that 5-on-5, I thought that we needed to be faster. We needed to win more battles. We needed to do a better job of taking care of the puck. The third period was, for me, a reflection of good chunks of the second period and some of the first period. So there were areas that we needed to be better at."
Josi gave the Predators a 2-0 lead at 7:43 of the first on the power play. P.K. Subban set Josi up above the right faceoff circle, and he beat Smith with a one-timer for his second goal.

Tkachuk dangled around Mattias Ekholm and Josi, and beat Rinne to give the Flames momentum.

Save of the game

Smith made a point-blank save on Colton Sissons at 4:27 of overtime from right in front of the net. Sissons got the puck from Forsberg and tried to beat Smith on the glove side.

Highlight of the game

Ferland's goal came on a forehand-to-backhand move that beat Rinne on the glove side.

Flames forward Jaromir Jagr did not play because of a lower-body injury. … The Predators have blown two multigoal leads in four home games and are 1-0-1 in those games. Forsberg has 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in nine games. His seven goals in October are tied with James Neal (2014, 2015) for most in Predators history.
