GLENDALE, Ariz. --With Chad Johnson stellar in net since mid-November and Johnny Gaudreau putting up multipoint games since his return from injury, the Calgary Flames have climbed the Pacific Division standings.
Gaudreau set up defenseman Mark Giordano's goal in the first period and Dougie Hamilton's game-winner 1:09 into overtime to give the Flames their fifth straight win, 2-1 against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Thursday.
The Flames (15-13-2) are 8-2-1 in their past 11 games and tied with the Edmonton Oilers for first place in the Pacific (32 points).

Gaudreau, who has six points (two goals, four assists) in three games since returning from a broken finger and 17 points in 20 games this season, never left the ice in overtime.

He had a shot on goal nine seconds into the extra period, and then as he was about to go off for a change, he curled back with the puck in the Coyotes zone and dropped it to Hamilton, who split two defenders before beating goalie Mike Smith for the win.
"Johnny made a good play and instincts took over for me," Hamilton said. "It's probably better for me when that happens. You don't have time to think about what you're going to do. It was awful nice to see that go in."

Johnson made 27 saves for this 12th win and is 10-2-0 in his past 12 starts dating to Nov. 15.
"This run we're on … it all starts with Chad," Hamilton said. "He's so calm in the net, he makes things look easy, and it's easy to play in front of him. It gives our team confidence. We're playing simple hockey and getting goals when we need them."
That's not happening for the Coyotes (8-13-5), who have scored eight goals during a season-high six-game losing streak (0-3-3) and two goals or fewer in 11 of their past 14 games.
Max Domi scored for Arizona before leaving the game with an upper-body injury after he fought Calgary's Garnet Hathaway late in the second period. He was bleeding from under his left eye.
The Coyotes earned a point two nights after a 4-0 loss at the Chicago Blackhawks.
"Tonight, we had a lot more guys on board and we were in a hockey game because of it," said Smith, who made 33 saves. "We had some emotion in our group and some competing."
The Coyotes outshot the Flames 7-1 over the first 10 minutes of the game, and Domi scored eight seconds after a penalty to Calgary forward Alex Chiasson for goaltender interference ended.
Johnson stopped Doan on a rebound, but he fell on his back and out of the crease. Domi won a stick battle for the puck and slid it into the open net at 7:23 for his fifth goal and a 1-0 Arizona lead.
Doan's assist was the 554th of his NHL career, moving him past Thomas Steen for most in the history of the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise.

But that was it for Arizona's offense, and Gaudreau twice set up a defenseman to pull out the win.
"They work hard in our defensive zone, so it's great to see them rewarded on the offensive end," he said.

Goal of the game

Gaudreau set up Giordano in the right faceoff circle on the power play, and Giordano leaned into a one-timer that squeezed under Smith's extended pad to tie it 1-1 with 2:15 left in the first period.

Save of the game

Giordano swooped to the net behind the Arizona defense, but Smith went post to post and got the toe of his skate on the puck near the left post 6:54 into the second period to keep the game tied 1-1.

Unsung performance of the game

Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson left the game twice, first after he was checked from behind by Lance Bouma in the first period, and then after a deflected Hamilton shot hit him in the face in the second. He received stitches and returned for the third period.

Highlight of the game

Hamilton has four goals this season but two of them are game-winners. His nifty move in overtime ended things.

They said

"It's something that if you win the game, it feels pretty good. It wasn't the prettiest but obviously at some point is kind of special." -- Coyotes forward Shane Doan on his franchise-record 554th assist
"We've got traction now, but we've got to stay consistent. We dug a hole early in the season, we're getting out of it, but we've got to keep pushing."-- Flames coach Glen Gulutzan

Need to know

Doan is the fifth player from a current franchise to hold its record for games played (1,492), goals (399), assists (554), points (953), game-winning goals (69) and power-play goals (126), according the Elias Sports Bureau. The others are Ron Francis (Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes), Mike Modano, (Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars), Rick Nash (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Joe Sakic (Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche).
