Drafted in the third round (No. 78) by the Flames in the 2008 NHL Draft, Bouma began his pro career by spending the better part of two seasons with Abbotsford of the American Hockey League, though he did play 43 games for the Flames in that span.

Bouma became a more rounded player, blocking shots, killing penalties and delivering hits. In 2013-2014, he was rewarded as he played 78 games with Calgary, scoring five goals with 10 assists.
The next season Bouma scored 16 goals and 34 points in 78 games before a broken finger sidelined him for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
On July 23, 2015, Bouma signed a three-year contract with the Flames.
The product of Provost, Alberta, won the Memorial Cup with Vancouver of the Western Hockey League in 2007, alongside two other future NHL players, Milan Lucic and Evander Kane.
