Up by two with less than 10 minutes to play in the third, it appeared the Lightning were poised for a victory over the Stars on Tuesday. Instead, Dallas rallied with two goals in the final three minutes of regulation to force the game to overtime and then a shootout.
In the shootout, Ross Colton and Brayden Point scored for Tampa Bay, while Andrei Vasilevskiy made a game-winning save on Alexander Radulov to lead the Bolts to a nervy 4-3 win at the American Airlines Center.

From the opening faceoff, Tampa Bay did not look like a team that had just played 24 hours ago.
The Bolts came out of the gate flying on Tuesday and grabbed the lead in the early going. From the defensive blueline, Ondrej Palat fed Point streaking through the neutral zone to set up a breakaway. In alone on Jake Oettinger, Point made a move to his backhand and slipped the puck through the goaltender's five-hole.
Tampa Bay was so dominant in the first, it seemed like a missed opportunity that they finished the period only up by one goal. Oettinger made 17 saves in the opening 20 minutes and kept Dallas in the game even as they spent most of the period under siege.
The Stars pushed back in the second period and equalized on a power play at the 9:05 mark. Miro Heiskanen moved in from the point and put home a rebound after traffic from Joe Pavelski in front kept Vasilevskiy from being able to corral the puck. The goal was the first Vasilevskiy had allowed against the Stars since Game 5 of last season's Stanley Cup Final.
The game stayed tied for just over five minutes until hard work from Pat Maroon and Colton behind the Dallas net led to a goal that put Tampa Bay back in front. Maroon finally won the puck from Jamie Oleksiak and fed Mathieu Joseph for a one-timer from the slot that Oettinger couldn't keep out.
A vintage power play one-timer from Steven Stamkos gave the Lightning some insurance in the third. Victor Hedman set up the shot with a feed from the point and Stamkos blasted the shot from the left circle to put Tampa Bay up 3-1.
The Stamkos goal turned out to be what the Lightning needed to get the game to overtime, as Dallas stormed back to tie the game late in the third. Jamie Benn struck first, crashing the net and putting home Heiskanen's feed from down low. Dallas then tied the game 41 seconds later when Ryan McDonagh's clearing attempt deflected off Radulov's skate and past Vasilevskiy.
Both teams scored on their first attempts in the shootout. In the second round, Vasilevskiy stopped Pavelski, while Point beat Oettinger to put Tampa Bay in front. Vasilevskiy then secured the win for the Bolts with a stop on Radulov in round three.
