LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Knights fell to the San Jose Sharks with a 7-3 loss on Friday night at T-Mobile Arena. Despite a three-point night from Jack Eichel (2G, 1A) and two points from Phil Kessel (2A), the Golden Knights could not do enough to power past San Jose.
2021-22 REWIND
In a year hampered by injuries, the Golden Knights missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season after posting a 43-31-8 record and 94 points. Vegas was led by Jonathan Marchessault who put up 66 points (30G, 36A) in 76 games with Chandler Stephenson second with 64 points (21G, 43A) in 79 games. Shea Theodore led all VGK defensemen in scoring with 52 points (14G, 38A) in 78 games. Jack Eichel returned from neck surgery in February and notched 25 points (14G, 11A) in 34 games to end the season.
OPPOSITION UPDATE
Arizona finished eighth in the Central Division last season with 57 points and an overall record of 25-50-7. The Coyotes missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. They were led by their highest scorer Clayton Keller, who notched 63 points (28G, 35A) during the regular season. Their third highest scorer was current Golden Knight Phil Kessel, who reached 52 points (8G, 44A) during his time with the club.
KEYS TO THE GAME
Adapt: This 'Golden Age' season is all about change, especially with the newest addition - head coach Bruce Cassidy. By adapting to unfamiliar faces on the team as well as a new coach, the team's chemistry will come much easier. They must find their groove with each other and be open to new systems.
Defense and Goaltending: The offense kept the Golden Knights in the game on Friday when a comeback almost sparked. While preseason games don't count in the standings, the team will look to use the game as an opportunity to tighten up defensively and limit mistakes.
