OPPOSITION UPDATE
Toronto currently sits at fifth in the Atlantic Division with a record of 4-2-0, the same record as Vegas. Last season, the Maple Leafs exited in the first round of the playoffs, falling in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto was led by their top scoring juggernaut Auston Matthews, who racked up 106 points last year (60G, 46A). Not far behind him was forward Mitch Marner, who put up 97 points throughout the season (35G, 62A).
Currently, captain John Tavares leads the team in points with seven (3G, 4A) through six games. Matthews (1G, 5A) and William Nylander (3G, 3A) are close behind with six points. Toronto's only two losses have come to the Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes. The Maple Leafs enter Monday's game on a two-game win streak including wins against Dallas and Winnipeg.
A VEGAS VICTORY WOULD…
- Mark the 219th win in franchise history
- Give the Golden Knights five wins in their first seven games of the season for the third time in franchise history
KEYS TO THE GAME
Scoring First: The Maple Leafs have some of the top scorers in the league. If the Golden Knights can control the game early on, it will give them a decent cushion to try to hold on and extend their lead against high-scoring Toronto.
Goaltending Matchup:Toronto has turned to Ilya Samsonov in net with an injury to Matt Murray. Vegas has rotated Logan Thompson and Adin Hill in the crease so far this season. The early stages of the season present opportunities for goalies to stand out and Monday's matchup will be a case study in goalies looking to show their teams what they've got.
