During the 1996-1997 season, Martin Brodeur played in 67 regular season games, winning 37 of them. The Devils entered the 1997 postseason to face off against the Montreal Canadians in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. In the first game of the series, New Jersey had a 4-2 lead and with 45 seconds left in the game, Brodeur fired a shot down the ice into an empty net to earn his first NHL career goal.
