PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ. -The Devils get ready for a big game against their rivals across the Hudson River tonight, their first road contest of the season.
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff talked about the similarities of both teams following morning skate.
"They got two or three offensive defensemen, a lot like us. They've got two really good goaltenders. So it's an opportunity to play a team that I think has some great young players," said Ruff. "Some first picks in the draft and you look at it that these are the guys that are going to be the future of both teams."
On the outset, the game should have some extra meaning for Ruff, who was an assistant coach with the Rangers for three years, most recently last season. But he understated that fact today.
"I know I was part of that staff there last year, but for me, I'm excited for the group I'm coaching," he said. "I like the energy we got. I like the feel of our team. I'm just interested to see if we can carry on some of that momentum that we really gained in game two and knowing that the Rangers are almost in the same category, they didn't play a great game one. Played a really good game too. So we've got two teams in the same category and for me, it's really just another game."
Rangers lost their season opener 4-0 to the Islanders but bounced back in a big way to take game two 5-0. Tonight's game completes New York's season-opening three-game homestand.
POWER PLAY PERFORMANCE
The Devils saw some big improvement in their power play from the first game to the second despite not scoring in either one and in fact giving up a shorthanded marker on Saturday.
"If you looked at our power play in game one, I thought it was slow. We did have some opportunities, but we started slow. There was a lot of indecisions in some of the players, some of the plays we made, we hung on to it too long. I thought even later in that game, the power play got quicker. We attacked off one or two passes," Ruff began.

"We've worked on it. That game two, it was better. We created some more opportunities. We had better speed on the entries, gained the line a little bit easier against the good penalty killing team. We didn't finish on a couple of really good opportunities, but they were there. We spent a good part of yesterday's practice, again, working on it, trying to be quicker, trying to be more decisive trying to make sure that we have that lane to get the puck to the net."
Ruff was clear that the team shouldn't look for the pretty goal on the power play and that's what the team has been practicing.
"We get it there. And we look for second opportunities. We look for tips. It's not always going to be the four or five passes in the scene pass. It's going to be sometimes. An opportunity that goes off the goaltender goes to the right spot and, and we're in that area to, to put away a second chance."
Damon Severson talked about some of the adjustments the team has made on the man advantage.
"We didn't have much time to work on it throughout camp. We kind of had a few sporatic days, but we worked on it in practice yesterday and, and you know, switched up a few things. And I think in the first game of the season, our breakouts were a little bit disconnected and we talked about that a little bit. Game two was better getting in the zone. Now it's just a matter of finding our options, finding the open man and, and trying to figure out the best course of action of putting the puck in the back of the net.
"But I think we're, we're gonna find a way to pull on in, and then we're just going to take off from there."

BLACKWOOD'S START
Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood was asked about his strong start to the season, with a .954 save pecentage through two games. This despite no pre-season game action.
"I felt pretty good for no exhibition games going into the first and second game there. I mean you know it was a good start, but obviously there's a long way to go (for the reason of the season)," Blackwood began. "It was nice to get off to a good start, but to keep pushing to stay sharp and to keep trying to get better all the time."

With the retirement of Corey Crawford, Blackwood is expected to get more playing time than likely expected heading into camp, though the team did pluck veteran goaltender Aaron Dell of waivers from Toronto yesterday.
"It's interesting year with the amount of games we play, but it'l be a fun challenge and definitely a new experience for me, trying to manage playing a lot and growing my game and practice. So it'll be a fun challenge for me."

THE RIVALRY

New Jersey will play their New York rivals eight times in the 2021 regular season, with the first matchup Tuesday night
Every time the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers suit up against each other, it's a special moment for fans and players of both organizations. The rivalry dates back decades and continues on with two up-and-coming teams this year.
"I'm excited and I think the Devils Rangers rivalry is a really exciting one," said Devils forward Jack Hughes. "Especially with two up and coming teams, it's gonna be exciting to get to play [eight] times it should be fun."
"It's always a special game," said Devils forward Pavel Zacha. "Every year those games are very important for us to win. Every game you get ready the same way but also the rivalry is huge and we went to go there and win."
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff was an assistant coach for the Rangers the previous three seasons, and is excited about the rivalry renewing with these young teams.
"You look at the rosters, you got the number one pick overall on both sides," said Ruff about Devils 2019 first-overall pick Jack Hughes, and Rangers 2020 first-overall pick Alexis Lafrenière. "You're looking at two teams that have some great young players."
"This rivalry, I think it's just starting to build. I think both clubs are going in the right direction and it's gonna make for some really exciting hockey."
Although this year will be different without packed fans who fill Prudential Center and Madison Square Garden, the intensity of this cross-river rivalry remains.
"Without fans it'll be different for sure, but I mean every time you see the Rangers across the ice, it'll be a fun one."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (1-0-1) AT RANGERS (1-1-0)
TV: MSG & MSG+ at 7:00 p.m. ET
Head-to-Head:
This is the first of eight meetings between the rivals and East Division teams this season. On Saturday, the Devils won 2-1 in overtime over the Boston Bruins. Devils rookie forward Yegor Sharangovich, scored with less than two seconds left in the five-minute overtime period to get the win. The goal was Sharangovich's first NHL goal in his second ever NHL game. Devils forward Miles Wood also scored in the Devils win for his second goal of the season in as many games.
New Jersey dropped their season opener 3-2 against Boston on Thursday night, also in overtime. Boston's Brad Marchand had the first and game winning goals, while Miles Wood and Ty Smith scored for the Devils.
Like the Devils, the Rangers also won their second game after dropping their season opener. Both games were against the New York Islanders on Thursday and Saturday. The Rangers shutout the Islanders Saturday, 5-0 and saw two-goal performances by Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin. Kaapo Kakko also scored. In Thursday's season opener, the Rangers fell 4-0 to the Islanders. Anders Lee scored two while Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal each added one for the Islanders.
By the Numbers:
During the 2019-20 season, the Devils and Rangers played four times with each team winning twice. ... When Yegor Sharangovich scored his first NHL goal in overtime, he became the second ever Devil to do so. Sharangovich joins Jon Merrill with this achievement for the Devils franchise. Merrill's first NHL goal was on February 7th, 2014 against the Edmonton Oilers.
