WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils return home and will play the New York Rangers on Tuesday. The game can be seen on MSG+ 2 and heard on the Devils Hockey Network. Puck drop is 7:08 p.m. ET.
"There were a lot of guys in there that weren't feeling well today," said Devils captain Nico Hischier. "But they stood together and played. It would have been nice to come out here with a win. It would have felt really good. The guys were struggling with illness but at the end of the day, we lost the hockey game."
Down 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Devils struck for two goals early in the third to take the lead.
Jesper Bratt scored 26 seconds into the final frame and three minutes later, Nico Hischier put home a Bratt rebound to give the Devils a 3-2 lead.
Midway through the third, the Oilers tied the game. Tyson Barrie ripped a shot short side from the right faceoff circle past Gillies.
"Until we took the lead (in the third period), we were the better team in the game," said Devils head coach Lindy Ruff. "I thought that goal from a bad angle, terrible goal, gave them some life. Our goalie had a tough night. You can look at the first goal, look at the second goal. It's a team we want to limit chances, high rush opportunities.
"The momentum changed when all of a sudden a tough goal goes in."
A minute later, P.K. Subban went to the box for tripping to give the Oilers a power play opportunity to take the lead and they did just that.
Evander Kane scored a power play marker followed 49 seconds later by a goal by Zach Hyman to move the home side in front 5-3.
"Little mistakes. Got a penalty from one of those mistakes and we knew they have a great power play. They scored on us. It's frustrating but if you look at the whole game we did a couple stuff really good. I wouldn't say it was a terrible game," Hischier stated.
"We'll fix that and take the good stuff out of it."
Connor McDavid added an empty netter to make the final 6-3.
It didn't take long for the Oilers to get on the board. Leon Draisaitl swooped in to pick up a rebound and fire it past Jon Gillies who was sliding to get back in position.
Devils got that goal back four minutes later. Bratt was sprung on a breakaway by Nico Hischier and deked out Oilers goaltender Mikko Koskinen to knot the game up at 1-1. Bratt's two goals and assist led the way for the Devils and that was despite ailing with the stomach flu.
"It's a game where a number of people I had to limit ice time, they weren't doing well (health wise)," added Ruff. "They gave me all I had."
He also noted Bratt's resilient effort.
"There are a lot of times when you're not feeling well you come up with a hell of a game and he played well."
Early in the second, Mason Geertsen dropped the gloves with Zack Kassian. The two traded blows in a spirited fight then headed to the box for five each.
A third Devils power play occurred late in the middle frame when Kassian was called for high sticking.
Devils were unable to score on the man advantage and shortly after the penalty expired, Evander Kane had a good wraparound chance that at first looked like was denied by Gillies. Play continued on for about 20 more seconds before the horn blew to acknowledge that the puck did cross the goal line.
