DALLAS –– Morgan Geekie and Michael DiPietro carefully balanced their trays as they inched towards the table.
Mac and cheese, green beans, creamed corn, coleslaw, cornbread and onion and pickles filled Geekie’s red platter. DiPietro guessed he was carrying around six pounds of beef ribs, brisket, sausage and turkey.
Matt Poitras made his way back from the drink station with a lemonade, eyes wide.
“Do you guys have takeout containers here? There’s no way we’re eating all this food,” he said. “I don’t even know how to attack this.”
After sweeping the California road trip, with wins against the San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, and Los Angeles Kings, the Boston Bruins had an off-day in Dallas on Sunday. They play the Stars at American Airlines Center on Tuesday.
And, of course, what better thing to do in Texas than eat some barbecue? Geekie, Poitras and DiPietro chose Terry Black’s as their spot for lunch – and got a taste of nearly everything.
“If I have a heart attack at the table, it was really a pleasure being your teammate,” DiPietro said with a chuckle as he settled into his seat.
The 27-year-old goaltender is coming off his first NHL win on Friday in Anaheim; he posted a 26-save performance. Getting his dad and wife, Grace, on the phone was his priority following the career milestone.
“I was actually surprised my dad was still up, but it was good to talk to him. Grace was excited; I think our dog was pretty pissed off because she was still up and he didn’t know why. It was pretty cool to make those calls,” DiPietro said. “He was just like, ‘Finally, you were able to get the monkey off your back.’ He was just happy, sticking with it through the years. Obviously it means a lot, because he is my best friend. For me to be able to share it with him and the journey we’ve been on – hopefully we can have many more, but definitely happy to get the first one out of the way.”
