The best of Vladislav Gavrikov ... so far

Blue Jackets fans likely weren't sure what they were getting when Vladislav Gavrikov first arrived in Columbus.

Turns out, the answer was an octopus.

At least that's what head coach John Tortorella saw in Gavrikov's way to frustrate and shut down opponents during his first season with Columbus.

"If he gets his tentacles (on you), he's like an octopus," Tortorella said. "If he gets you, it's tough to get away from him. He's all arms and he's strong and he's ugly as sin at times, but he doesn't get beat.

"You know, the definition for him for me is he's a hockey player. I think that's the way he acts. I think there's no frills. At times he's ugly, but I think he just finds a way to be effective all the time."

There was no doubt about that, as Gavrikov filled his role about as well as anyone on the Blue Jackets in 2019-20. The Russian defenseman made a quick partnership with David Savard and the two rugged blueliners became the top shutdown pair for Columbus, as the duo was among the best in the NHL at preventing opposing teams from scoring goals.

Gavrikov also proved to be an occasional threat on the offensive end as well, chipping in five goals and 18 points in 69 games while punctuating each tally with his trademark phone celebration. Add in his effervescent personality and sly sense of humor and Gavrikov quickly became a fan favorite and a key part of the CBJ squad.

"I think everything turned out well," he said of his first year. "Thanks to the entire organization, they helped me to quickly adapt to all the things which were new to me."
