Nicolas Aube-Kubel Philadelphia Flyers

Getting to know Nicolas Aube-Kubel
Nicolas Aube-Kubel was picked up on waivers by the Colorado Avalanche on November 13th 2021 and has notched two assists since joining the squad.
Aube-Kubel was selected by the Flyers in the second round (No. 48) of the 2014 NHL Draft, and turned pro after spending two additional seasons with Val-d'Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

What was your first reaction to being picked up by Colorado?
"I was surprised to have a really good team like the Avs, a team that goes to the playoffs every year and has a chance to win the cup, pick me up."
What was the toughest part about leaving the Flyers organization?
"Probably my friends in the team and outside of the team. My girlfriend is also from the area, so it was easy to see her family as well. I guess that's the hardest part."
What was your first experience with the Avalanche like?
"The practice facility is a little smaller, guys are a little closer. I feel like in a smaller gym, guys are always next to each other, talking to each other. You get to be side by side with a lot of teammates. As soon as I got here, I was really happy with guys talking to me, teammates being happy to see me. It's a brotherhood here, I like it.

How are you looking to improve with this opportunity?
"I worked a lot on my defensive side in Philly, because I had to do that to play. Having a few chances on the offensive line with Jost and Newhook, it's a good chance to show what I can do offensively too."
Has the elevation affected you?
"Yeah, it's a big difference. I was surprised on the first practice how short of breath I was. I got to play in Lake Tahoe last year which is like that but on a shorter scale. I'm excited to play, but it's a little harder to practice."
What was your earliest hockey memory?
"In Quebec, theres the Quebec Pee-Wee Tournament, it's probably the biggest in the world for pee-wee and we got to play with Montreal Canadien jerseys and represent the team at that tournament. There were a bunch of teams from the U.S. too, I remember Detroit, Cincinnati, Boston. That stands out."
Do you have any pregame routines or rituals that are a must for you?
"No, I'm not really superstitious like the other guys. Just a little stitious. I just think eating well on a game day and the day before is what I put emphasis on. Sleeping well, as well."
What does an ideal off day look like for you?
"Have a nice late brunch and then watch some football with my friends."
What's the best piece of advice you would give to aspiring NHL players?
"Talent can take you far, but work ethic can take you even farther. Growing up, I wasn't always the best player, but working hard even in slumps, it'll show."
