Winning in Washington

Brock Nelson's goal at 1:22 of overtime helped the Avalanche pick up a 3-2 win against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Sunday. Gabriel Landeskog scored in his return to the lineup, Nicolas Roy added a tally for the Avs and Martin Necas posted two assists. In net for the Avalanche, Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced. Additionally, Colorado went 4/5 on the penalty kill.

"That's kind of the plan there with Marty (Necas) in a three-on-three situation," Nelson said about waiting for Necas to find him in front of the net. "Just get him the puck and try to get open. He's so good at creating space for himself and for everybody else with how shifty he is, how quick he is and just the possession play. So, [it was an] unbelievable play by him, [I] was just trying to get to the net and find a lane and [he] put it right on me."

With the win, the Avalanche improved to 46-13-10.

"I thought we got better as the game went on, Landeskog said. "I thought [in the] second period we started creating some more offense."

How It Happened

Washington's Justin Sourdif opened the scoring at 11:53 of the first period with a breakaway goal.

In his first game since March 6th, Landeskog tied the game at 1:05 of the third period with his 10th goal of the season via a shot from the right doorstep into an open net. The play started when Capitals goalie Logan Thompson went behind the net to play the puck, but his pass was intercepted by Necas below the goal line before the Avs winger sent a feed to Landeskog for the goal.

Roy gave the Avs a 2-1 lead at 6:03 of the third period with his eighth goal of the season via a shot from the slot after picking up a bouncing puck in the slot.

The Capitals tied the game on the power-play when Alex Ovechkin scored via a left-circle one-timer at 14:17 of the third period.

At 1:22 of overtime, Nelson scored the game-winning tally with his 32nd goal of the season via a shot from the left doorstep set up by Necas' feed.
