CENTENNIAL, Colo.--The Colorado Avalanche continued its preparation for the regular season on Tuesday with its second of three straight practice days prior to opening night.

Colorado had its second consecutive hour-long session at Family Sports Center, with 26 players participating. Defenseman Cale Makar did not skate as he was given a maintenance day.

"He should be good to go. He got a little tweak, so he's going to take the day to get fixed up," said head coach Jared Bednar.

Ian Cole, who wore an orange, non-contact jersey, took part in the team session for the third straight day, but the defender stayed out for the entire practice for the first time this season. He also skated before and after the group training with on-ice performance consultant Shawn Allard.

Cole is recovering from offseason surgery on both of his hips, with an exact timetable of his return yet to be determined. However, head coach Jared Bednar said last week that he expects Cole to be back in the lineup much sooner than his original prognosis, which was December.

Tuesday's practice was the last one with the Avalanche for three players before they were sent to the American Hockey League's Colorado Eagles. Forward Jayson Megna and defensemen Kevin Connauton and Calle Rosen skated with the club before being reassigned; the Avs needed to submit a 23-man active roster to the league in the afternoon.

In addition, the Colorado designated Cole as an injured, non-roster participant, allowing the rear guard to remain in Denver and practice without counting against the team's 23-player limit.

"The guys that are here are here for a reason because we've really liked what we've seen from them," Bednar said. "Again, it's about getting our team as good as we possibly can for opening night while also still exploring and keeping as much depth as we possibly can."

The Avalanche will hold its last practice before the start of the 2019-20 campaign on Wednesday at Pepsi Center (closed to the public) before hosting the Calgary Flames in the season opener on Thursday.
