Andreas Martinsen Dallas Stars preseason October 5, 2016

DALLAS--One of the old sayings when it comes to having success during a long season is to play great at home and be .500 on the road.
The Colorado Avalanche players know their record at Pepsi Center has not nearly been good enough, but they've at least come close to the road part of the sports proverb. The Avalanche is 8-9 in visiting buildings this season and can reach an even mark again tonight, as the team plays its final road contest before the New Year at American Airlines Center against the Dallas Stars.

The Avs can't put their finger on why they've had more success away from Denver than in their own friendly confines.
"To be honest, I'm not sure what it is. I think the lack of success at home is a little baffling," defenseman Tyson Barrie said. "We're trying to fix it. I guess if we can keep playing well on the road, that's a good start, but we got to transition that to the home game too."
For head coach Jared Bednar, it has come down to not making things more complex than they should. He said his club has played more of a simple game in visiting rinks.
"I don't think we're always looking for the pretty play. We tend to get to the dirty areas more and get more competitive in front of both nets," Bednar said. "I think that's helped us out. There seems to be more of a focus for 60 minutes on the road as well. We're trying to get our guys to break the game down shift-by-shift, five-minute segments at a time, and then refocus to make sure that we're accomplishing that at home too, but I think we're doing a better job of it on the road, certainly."
Tonight marks the fourth of five contests this year between Colorado and Dallas, with the Avs 1-2-0 so far in the season series.

The last time the Avalanche was in Texas, the visitors dominated the final 40 minutes of play. Colorado outshot Dallas 36-22 in the game and 30-16 in the last two periods, but it couldn't completely erase some tough bounces in the opening frame and lost 3-2.
That Nov. 17 contest is just further proof that the Avs need to get off to a good start against a Stars club that is 3-0-1 in its last four games.
"Obviously you look back at the last couple months, when you don't have good starts it's an uphill battle," Landeskog said. "So we got to make sure that we come out and establish a good road game and make sure we're putting pucks in behind them. Offensively, I think we've gotten better and our O-zone time has gotten better and some possession stats, as far as that goes."
The Avalanche's last road contest on Friday at the Chicago Blackhawks was one of the club's best efforts of the season. The squad played an overall solid game, was patient and was able to pull out a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in overtime.
Despite losing the following game at home against the Calgary Flames, Landeskog said the Avs could still build off what they did in Chicago.
"Obviously coming off that last road win in Chicago, we got to follow that up tonight and make sure that we take care of business here on the road and then come home," Landeskog said. "We got to deal with [the home record] when we get there, but tonight make sure that we execute our systems and make sure our effort is there. We know that this is a building that we all love to play in and have had some success in earlier. So come out and do that and I think we'll be good.
Colorado has won four of the last six games at the American Airlines Center and is 12-4-1 in its last 17 meetings versus Dallas.

CODY AND PATTY BACK IN

The Avalanche will make just two changes to its lineup this evening, with forward Cody McLeod and defenseman Patrick Wiercioch returning to the ice after being healthy scratches for the past two games.
McLeod will play on the wing on the fourth line with John Mitchell and Andreas Martinsen, while Wiercioch will be paired on defense with Eric Gelinas.
Veterans Francois Beauchemin and Jarome Iginla didn't participate in morning skate but both will play against the Stars.
"We had a tough practice yesterday," head coach Jared Bednar said. "Those guys are banged up a little bit. We're going to give them the rest in the morning so they're ready to go at night."
Cody Goloubef and Joe Colborne will be the healthy scratches, along with Semyon Varlamov. The goaltender did not make the trip to Dallas as his groin injury is being reevaluated back in Colorado.
Calvin Pickard will make his third straight start in net.
