Rapid Recap: Stars 4, Avalanche 3 (SO)

DALLAS--The Colorado Avalanche fell 4-3 to the Dallas Stars in a shootout on Saturday night at American Airlines Center in both clubs' final outing of the preseason.
Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky scored their first goals of exhibition play 22 seconds apart in the first period to give the Avalanche an early 2-0 lead, but the Stars constructed a comeback with two tallies in the final four minutes of the contest to send the outing into extra time.
Joonas Donskoi also found the back of the net for the Avs, while Jamie Benn and Joe Pavelski both had multi-point outings for Dallas (goal and assist each).
Colorado used a mostly veteran lineup, with goaltender Philipp Grubauer playing the entire game and finishing with 33 saves.

11:22 COL (1-0) - PPG, Nazem Kadri tallied his first of the preseason on a wrist shot from the mid-slot.
11:44 COL (2-0) - Andre Burakovsky scored from nearly the same spot as Kadri, from the slot on a wrister that went top shelf.

13:33 DAL (2-1) - Tyler Seguin scored into the an open area of the net after a spin move in the low slot took Grubauer out of position.
3rd Period
6:04 COL (3-1) - Joonas Donskoi picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired a shot that beat Ben Bishop far side.
16:22 DAL (3-2) - Joe Pavelski cut Colorado's lead in half with his first goal of the preseason.
18:27 DAL (3-3) - Jamie Benn tied the game with a wrist shot from the right circle.

ROSTER REPORT

Defenseman Erik Johnson (shoulder) and forward Colin Wilson (shoulder) made their preseason debuts after having offseason surgeries… Wilson missed most of the team's training camp and preseason with a minor lower-body injury. He participated in his first team practice on Thursday at the club's fan fest and also skated in Friday's session… Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Zadorov all appeared in their second games of the preseason.
The Avs announced in the third period that they had signed forward Mikko Rantanen to a six-year contract through the 2024-25 season.

INJURY UPDATE

Shane Bowers returned to Colorado's lineup after missing two practices and the club's last preseason game with a minor injury… Valeri Nichushkin did not travel to Dallas as he deals with a minor foot injury from blocking a shot in the Avs' contest on Wednesday in Vegas… Ian Cole continues to progress after have offseason surgery on both of his hips and was a non-contact participant in Friday's practice.

UP NEXT

The Avalanche begins the 2019-20 regular season. Colorado has four days to prepare for opening night on Thursday when it hosts the Calgary Flames at Pepsi Center. The two teams met in the first round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a series the Avs won in five games after picking up four straight victories.
Colorado's current roster is at 30 players and the team needs to get down to a league-mandated, 23-man active roster by the season opener. The Avalanche is expected to make final cuts early next week.
