This Week in Centennial History

As part of the League's Centennial Celebration, NHL.com is taking a look back at memorable events each week. Here are Centennial highlights for the week of August 13-19:

Aug. 19, 1988:
Guy Lafleur
, already a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame,
begins a comeback
by agreeing to a two-year contract with the New York Rangers that's contingent on his performance at training camp. Lafleur makes the Rangers and spends one season with New York and two with the Quebec Nordiques before retiring for good.

Aug. 18, 1994:
Doug Gilmour
is named the
15th captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs
. He gets the captaincy two months after the previous captain,
Wendel Clark
, is sent to Quebec in a trade that brings forward Mats Sundin to Toronto.

Aug. 17, 1992: A group of
Long Island businessmen acquire operating control of the New York Islanders
from owner John Pickett and replace longtime general manager Bill Torrey, builder of the 1980s dynasty teams, with Don Maloney.

Aug. 16, 1987: Goaltender Carey Price is
born in Anahim Lake, British Columbia
. Price, taken No. 5 in the 2005 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, wins the Hart, Vezina and Ted Lindsay trophies after going 44-16-6 with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage in 2014-15.

Aug. 15, 1989: Roger Nielson is
named the 25th coach of the New York Rangers
. Neilson guides the Rangers to the Patrick Division title in his first season and to the Presidents' Trophy in 1991-92.

Aug. 14, 1985: Defenseman Shea Weber, owner of one of the hardest shots in NHL history, is
born in Sicamous, British Columbia
.

Aug. 13, 1949:
Bobby Clarke
, the leader of the Philadelphia Flyers' Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1974 and 1975, is
born in Flin Flon, Manitoba
.
