This morning, the coaching staff wanted to take a look at Evgeni Malkin on Sidney Crosby's wing.
It's something that has happened sporadically throughout their 21 seasons together, "whether it’s after penalty kills, or the odd shift here and there, at the end of a period or something," the captain said.
But until last season, Malkin had spent his entire Hall of Fame career at center. He moved to the wing after returning from a shoulder injury, and adjusted well to the position, so the Penguins have kept Malkin there ever since.
So, if they do stay together for tonight's game, it will be interesting to see how that plays out, given Malkin's increased comfort playing that position. And of course, their overall comfort level with each other.
"I think we’re pretty familiar with each other," Crosby said with a smile. "Shouldn’t take much time to adjust there."
Here's how the lineup looked:
Rakell-Crosby-Malkin
Chinakhov-Kindel-Novak
Koivunen-Lapierre-Brazeau
Dewar-Lizotte-Robertson
(Kuzmenko)
Stastney-Karlsson
Girard-Korczak
Carlile-Letang

PP1) Karlsson, Crosby, Rakell, Kindel, Novak
PP2) Letang, Malkin, Chinakhov, Koivunen, Brazeau
