Nikolaj Ehlers helps Jets bounce back

VANCOUVER -- Nikolaj Ehlers decided to join linemate Patrik Laine's goal-scoring fun.
Ehlers scored two goals in the third period after setting up Laine's goal in the second to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 at Rogers Arena on Thursday.
"It's always nice scoring goals, you can ask Patrik about that," Ehlers said.

Ehlers assisted Laine for the latter's NHL rookie-leading 19th goal of the season to tie it 1-1 with 42.5 seconds left in the second period, then put the Jets ahead at 1:23 of the third. Ehlers picked a pass out of the air in his own zone and led a 2-on-1 rush, faking a pass before beating Canucks goalie Ryan Miller cleanly under the glove to make it 2-1. He then scored a power-play goal at 12:24 of the third to give the Jets a 3-1 lead.
"The game is on the line in the third and we've got a chance to win it, scoring a goal and getting the win, it feels good," Ehlers said.

Bryan Little scored with 4:17 left and Michael Hutchinson made 22 saves for the Jets (16-17-3), who bounced back from a 4-1 loss in Vancouver on Tuesday.
"The compete level changed for us in between the first and the second period," Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said.
Markus Granlund scored and Miller made 21 saves for the Canucks (14-17-3).
Vancouver lost right wing Jannik Hansen, who scored twice on Tuesday, to a lower-body injury with seven minutes left in the second period. Hansen was hit by Jets forward Mathieu Perreault, who was given a kneeing penalty, earlier in the period and pulled up favoring his right leg 11 seconds into his next shift.

Canucks coach Willie Desjardins didn't have an update after the game, but Hansen left Rogers Arena with a heavy limp and said he will have an MRI on Friday.
"He wanted to try it out," forward Alexandre Burrows said. "As soon as he stepped on the ice, a couple of little steps, and he just buckled."
Granlund scored at 3:54 of the first period, but Laine tied it late in the second after a rush pass from Ehlers, beating Miller glove side with a wrist shot from just above the right faceoff dot.
"He's an amazing kid," Laine, 18, said of Ehlers, 20. "I haven't seen a guy who can skate like that, and he has really good hands and he can also score. It's nice to be on the same line as him."

Goal of the game

Ehlers almost set up Laine on a power play, but Miller made a great save, so Ehlers scored before the advantage expired, skating out from below the goal line and beating Miller high. "I tried to put it backdoor to Patrik first, but he didn't want to score," Ehlers said. "I knew the defenseman was going to cheat a little bit and I just did it myself."

Save of the game

Hutchinson kept the Jets ahead 2-1 with a great save against Sven Baertschi on a power-play chance 4:54 into the third period, pushing to his right and getting his glove on the rising shot. "It was kind of funny, in the last couple of weeks [Jets goalie coach Wade Flaherty] has been doing a drill similar to that, where I slide across and make a glove save and that is kind of what happened and muscle memory just takes over," Hutchinson said. "I pushed across and was able to visually connect with the puck well and get the glove there."

Unsung performance of the game

Daniel Sedin had a backdoor tap-in chance to make it 2-0 on a power play 8:30 into the second period, but defenseman Toby Enstrom dove head-first and reached out with his stick to knock it away.

Highlight of the game

Bo Horvat fought through two defenders to get in alone on Hutchinson shorthanded early in the second period, but the Jets goalie pushed across to stop him with his blocker.

Henrik Sedin played his 1,200th NHL game, becoming the fourth Swedish player to reach the milestone. … The Canucks recalled forward Anton Rodin from a conditioning stint in the American Hockey League on Thursday. Desjardins said he is ready to play against the Calgary Flames on Friday.
