Johnson leads Blackhawks to shootout win

CHICAGO -- Tyler Johnson tied the game in the final minute of the third period and scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 3-2 win against the Vegas Golden Knights at United Center on Tuesday.

Johnson tied it 2-2 with 55 seconds remaining in the third on a one-timer from the slot. Chicago, which was on the power play, pulled Petr Mrazek to create a 6-on-4 advantage.
"Tyler plays so hard and does all the right things for us," Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said. "It was great to see him get that opportunity to tie it up and have that chance in [the shootout]. We tried a couple of shots from a little further out, and I think he went in, looked like he was going to deke, and he just slid it in there."

Johnson's goal came after Alex Pietrangelo was called for delay of game after he shot the puck over the glass.
"We did that the other night," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "That's on us a little bit, right? You've got to manage it a little better with time and score. Situational hockey. Maybe it's just more of a lower rim (around the boards). Veteran guys, you've just got to manage it better in those situations."
Cole Guttman scored, and Mrazek made 34 saves for the Blackhawks (19-32-5), who won their third straight.
Jack Eichel and Keegan Kolesar scored for the Golden Knights (34-18-5), who had won five in a row. Laurent Brossoit, who was playing his first NHL game since March 15, 2022, made 37 saves.
"He was very good, he gave us a chance to win," Cassidy said. "The goals that beat him were good shots. He made some good saves when we broke down in front of him, especially early on, getting tested there.
"Guys were getting behind us. We didn't play a very respectful game at all. He was there for us when we broke down in basic system coverages. I liked his game."
Brossoit earned the start after Adin Hill sustained a minor injury in a 5-4 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
"I try not to have too many expectations," Brossoit said. "I just wanted to keep it simple, play my game. For the most part, I felt pretty good. A few jitters in the first period, but I think overall it was a net positive for how I felt. There are plenty of things I can sharpen up.
"It's a lot of touches, 39 shots. It's nice to see the puck that many times the first game back. Yeah, it did make things a little easier. It was huge. Having a lot of shot volume is big for the confidence, just getting used to the pace of play again. But at the end of the day, we didn't get the result we wanted, so I'm still looking to get better."
Patrick Kane appeared to have scored for Chicago with a slap shot on a breakaway in the final second of overtime, but a video review determined that time had expired.
"Yeah, that was exciting," Richardson said. "I thought it was in because the feed that we had, it looked like it was like .01 still on it, but I think it's a TV feed, so it's not the actual clock feed. We just had to beat them twice, I guess."

VGK@CHI: Kane nearly wins it at the last second

Johnson said it would have been poetic justice had Kane scored in the shootout.
"It would've been cooler if Kane would've scored that goal," Johnson said. "I think that would've made it a lot more fun. Yeah, I was chuckling a little bit. He went back to the slap shot for it (in the shootout). It's kind of funny. Just happened we were able to get another point there."
Kolesar gave Vegas a 1-0 lead at 3:26 of the first period. Nicolas Roy intercepted the puck from Kane in the left face-off circle and fed Kolesar in front for a one-timer.
"[Brossoit] stood on his head for us a few times," Kolesar said. "We had a lot of lows in our game, and he stood on his head for us. Given that outcome, it's pretty sad for us."
Guttman tied it 1-1 at 12:39 with his second goal in as many games. He took a bank pass off the boards from Johnson in the neutral zone, moved in on Brossoit and scored five-hole on a breakaway.
Eichel put the Golden Knights back in front 2-1 at 11:32 of the second period, scoring blocker side from the right circle on a 2-on-1.
