SAN JOSE -- Martin Jones tied a season high with 43 saves for the San Jose Sharks in a 4-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks at SAP Center on Thursday.
Brent Burns, Mikkel Boedker and Chris Tierney each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks (31-19-8, 70 points), who are in second place in the Pacific Division, two points ahead of the Calgary Flames and three ahead of the Anaheim Ducks.

"It was a big win," Jones said. "Every game from here on out is important. We're fighting for our playoff lives. So, big two points."

Daniel Sedin scored, and Anders Nilsson made 26 saves for the Canucks (22-30-6), who lost for the sixth time in seven games.
"There are going to be games when you play well and lose," Vancouver coach Travis Green said. "I thought it was one of those games tonight."
Boedker gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 8:41 of the first period when he took a pass from Tierney and beat Nilsson with a wrist shot from the slot for his second goal in two games.
Burns, who won the Norris Trophy last season as the best defenseman in the NHL, began the game on the top line in place of injured forward Tomas Hertl (upper body). But when defenseman Dylan DeMelo went to the locker room 1:42 into the second period after being hit into the boards by Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler, Burns returned to defense.
Burns scored on a slap shot from above the left face-off circle at 4:57 of the second to give San Jose a 2-0 lead.

DeMelo returned at 8:14 of the second, but Burns played the rest of the game as a defenseman.
"The experiment didn't last very long," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said of Burns playing forward, his position for half of the 2012-13 season and all of 2013-14. "He proved out what I already knew, that he's a better defenseman. He's such a weapon back there. Just felt like the right thing to do, and looking back at the game now, it was the right thing to do."
Jones made 23 saves in the second period.
"He makes the key saves," Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. "He's just solid. We never worry about him. That's a credit to what he's done and the kind of confidence he puts out. You see some of the saves he can make when he's desperate. He's calm back there, he's solid. That's what we need."
Marcus Sorensen made it 3-0 at 3:06 of the third period when he scored on a wrist shot from above the right circle.
Sedin scored to get the Canucks within 3-1 at 6:43 after he took a cross-ice pass from Thomas Vanek to the left of the crease. Sedin had six shots on goal and five hits.
"He looked like he was 25 tonight," Green said of the 37-year-old forward.
Tierney scored from close range to make it 4-1 at 12:33 after getting a long pass from Burns.
"It's crazy," Canucks center Bo Horvat said of Burns. "He's a special player to be able to do what he does and to be as effective as he is at both ends of the rink. It's tough to defend, and he had a great game for them."

They said it

"I felt good. I just wanted to play aggressively today. I thought the guys did a good job in front of the net. I was able to just kind of focus on the shooter tonight and not worry about anything else." -- Sharks goaltender Martin Jones
"It was a tough game. We needed a couple things. We needed [Jones] to be very good, and he was excellent. He was our best player. We needed that tonight. We looked a little tired, I thought.
