Flames end Canucks' six-game winning streak

CALGARY -- Chad Johnson made 28 saves to help the Calgary Flames end the Vancouver Canucks' six-game winning streak, 3-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday.
Alex Chiasson, Matt Stajan and Michael Frolik scored for the Flames (22-18-2), who avenged a 4-2 loss at Vancouver on Friday to earn a split in the home-and-home series on back-to-back nights.

"We played a good game Friday] and probably deserved better and couldn't score on [Ryan] Miller," Johnson said. "Tonight we wanted to stick with it and be confident in our game. It was a fun atmosphere out there. We won the game and that's what's important."

Calgary, with 46 points, moved three points ahead of Vancouver in the Pacific Division. The Flames hold the first wild card from the Western Conference. The Los Angeles Kings, with 44 points, have the second wild card.
"That's a swing game," Stajan said. "[Friday] didn't go the way we wanted. We played well but didn't find a way to win. We weren't at our best today. To come out and find a way to get two points, stay above those guys in the standings, it's huge."

Bo Horvat scored and Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves for the Canucks (20-19-3).
"I thought we played better than our last game," Horvat said. "It's just unfortunate we couldn't get that one."
Chiasson and Stajan scored 1:03 apart in the first period to put the Flames up 2-0. Chiasson tipped a slap shot in the high slot by Sean Monahan behind Markstrom at 14:26, and Stajan redirected Garnet Hathaway's centering pass past Markstrom at 15:29.

Horvat scored 3:04 into the second to cut the lead to 2-1 and extend his point streak to seven games (three goals, five assists).
Markstrom made a save on a backdoor pass from Mikael Backlund to Frolik at 4:56 to keep Vancouver within one, and Johnson kept the Flames ahead when he trapped Henrik Sedin's redirect on Loui Eriksson's shot from the slot at 5:34.
Johnson stopped Sedin's one-timer on the power play at 15:19 of the third period, and made a pad save on Brandon Sutter later in the same man-advantage.

"I thought we had some really good chances, especially on the power play at the end there," Markstrom said. "We got some bounces [Friday] and we didn't get them today."
Frolik scored on a breakaway with 1:50 remaining.

Goal of the game

Hathaway chipped the puck by Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler before centering a pass into the slot that Stajan redirected by Markstrom's blocker to put the Flames up 2-0. "I just have to make sure I get my stick on it," Stajan said. "It's a game of inches. He put it in the right spot and I was able to get it by. It's a good play."

Save of the game

Markstrom stopped Matthew Tkachuk's point-blank shot 2:58 into the game with a quick pad after Backlund centered the puck from behind the goal line. It was Calgary's first shot of the game.

Highlight of the game

After making the initial save on Nikita Tryamkin's shot, Johnson dove to his left to get his paddle down to stop Jayson Megna on a rebound attempt just outside the crease. "What a bad rebound," Johnson said. "It came off high on my collarbone almost and I'm thinking some vulgar words in my mind really quickly. I just tried to get over as quick as possible because I knew it was going to be a bad goal if it went in."

Unsung performance of the game

Edler had an assist, four blocked shots and played a game-high 27:25 with Canucks defensemen Ben Hutton (upper-body) and Chris Tanev (back) out. Vancouver dressed five defensemen. "It's always tough when key guys go down but it's an opportunity for someone else to step up and play more and play big," Edler said.
