When Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk recently visited the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York with his parents, Frans and Allison, and the trip was captured for Episode 2 of "EPIX Presents Road to the NHL Outdoor Classics."
The van Riemsdyks, natives of Middletown, New Jersey, reflected on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, where almost 3,000 people died when hijacked airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon outside of Washington and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Middletown, located about 45 miles south of Manhattan, lost 37 people in the attacks, more people per capita than any city or town except New York. David Ferrugio, the father of a friend of Trevor's older brother, Toronto Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk, was among the Middletown residents who died that day.
"Everyone had friends and families that they knew," Trevor said on the show. "To come here and see this, it still kind of makes you tear up a bit to think about how so many people's lives changed."
Trevor was 10 and James was 12 when the attacks took place, and the visit gave the younger van Riemsdyk perspective on the country's resilience after the attacks.
"Seeing this memorial kind of gives you chills thinking back to it," he said. "It shows how strong we were as a nation to come together in the time after to really unite in the face of such adversity."
Episode 2 of "EPIX Presents Road to the NHL Outdoor Classics" airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT on EPIX, EPIX.com and NHL.com.
